(1,428 posts)The last election clearly demonstrates that. Shaming doesn't work. It depresses voter turn out at best. Encourages voters to vote the opposition at worst.

(32,886 posts)People make choices in their lives that aren't what they want but are attainable.
I made a choice in September to lease a car that was $19,000. I would have loved to have a car that was $100,000 but that wasn't a practical choice.
It's as easy as that.

(34,476 posts)This was true despite evidence of voter suppression effects.
Overall turnout (# of voters for any candidate) was higher in 2016 than in 2012, primarily reflected in a big increase in votes for the libertarian candidates.

(20,709 posts)regret for getting Trump elected. To this day, even after Trump is every bit as horrible as everyone knew he would be, they somehow are still satisfied with their decision to help him become president.

(32,886 posts)I'd really like to have the German far left who couldn't unite with the Social Democrats to prevent Hitler's election as chancellor and were subsequently gassed in concentration camps talk to today's far left to discuss the wisdom of their choices.

Chomsky also attacked the arguments made by philosopher Slavoj Zizek, who argued that Trumps election would at least shake up the system and provide a real rallying point for the left.
[Zizek makes a] terrible point, Chomsky told Hasan. It was the same point that people like him said about Hitler in the early 30s

(10,893 posts)who still claims that both parties are evil and similar (even though it was the GOP and not the Democrats who nominated a KKK/InfoWars-endorsed and climate change-denying candidate) is either a con artist, politically-obtuse, or both. I don't agree with everything BM says, but he hit the sweet spot here.

(53,066 posts)Now they can celebrate the deaths of the many who will die from losing their access to health care.
They can take pleasure in knowing that families have been ripped apart from immigration policy. Their scorn brought all kinds of success.
If people demonstrated a fraction of the concern for those who are suffering as a result of Trump's policies as we see toward the Trump humping White Supremacists and their vichy allies, we wouldn't be living through this hell.

(53,066 posts)Who the fuck cares? They are all part of the Trump coalition. They don't want to unify with Democrats. They have their man in DC, and they continue to defend him.
As I said in another post, if we saw a fraction of the concern for those suffering under the Trump administration as we do for those who support it, we wouldn't be living through a fascist hell.
Those people decided the lives of Americans didn't matter. They willfully chose to cause death and misery because they decided the lives of their fellow citizens mattered less than their egos and self-entitlement.
They not only preferred Trump, they continue to defend him even now. They openly proclaim their opposition to equal rights for women, people of color, and LGBT Americans. Trump is the president they wanted and continue to support. What exactly do you think it is you are going to unify with them over? Because i don't plan to sit back while the Democratic Party becomes the American version of the National Front to satisfy their perverse agenda.

(5,122 posts)I mean, who needs JPR types? Who needs Independents? And, damn, we sure as hell don't want anyone changing their minds and deciding they made a mistake voting for Trump. Oh no!
Remember, we're more open minded and accepting so why let anyone else in our game? Screw them. We'll win next time without their help for sure.

(53,066 posts)which they have not yet done, not even now seeing that millions of people may die for lack of access to healthcare, is not their responsibility. It's not incumbent on them to manifest a conscience or sense of social responsibility. Instead, Bill Maher and lowly citizens on DU must remain silent so as not to offend them-- on the off chance that come to regret their support of Trump and, coincident with that realization, suddenly happen upon DU.

(53,066 posts)He remains enormously popular with Republicans and independents who voted for him, more so than even Ronald Reagan was--more than any Republican president in recent history.
Those insisting Democratic voters be careful not to alienate Trump supporters have never showed a fraction of that empathy toward Democrats who disagree with them, even about something as minor as views about a single politician not even running for office. I've even seen people dismissively declaring they won't read posts by DUers they disagree with in the very threads in which they demand understanding toward white male Trump voters. It seems to me that if people truly value empathy toward others, they would demonstrate some of that themselves. Instead, we see very rigid walls, only it isn't Republicans on the other side; it's the Democratic base.
The claims of empathy are spurious, as is the argument that it's about winning elections. Elections hinge on numbers of votes. As much as some think the votes of 55,000 white male Trump voters matter more than tens of millions of Democrats, that's not how it works.
We see groups of Americans, especially Democrats, contemptuously dismissed all the time. The very people who insist that unity requires catering to the egos of Trump voters and JPR Trump defenders don't hesitate to insult groups of Democrats. We see it all the time. The argument therefore has nothing to do with unity, compassion, or winning elections. It is about values, specifically which kinds of people are valued and which are not.

The fact that they do not have any regrets how they voted, speaks volumes
As for the "voice of reason", I will give them this same voice of reason they gave to anyone who voted for the Democratic nominee:

(25,616 posts)the hatred. Quite another thing when hate is based on fiction: lies, propaganda, prejudice, gossip, willful ignorance, arrogance "I know everything and am never wrong," etc. Republicans and JPR types' hatred is based on fiction, not facts. Like the creatures beneath the Ghost of Christmas Present's robe: "This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware of them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased. Deny it!"
