(13,485 posts)The Internet evolves too quickly and cyber espionage with it. Expecting a standard lets our guard down and that is why we have these problems in the first place. It's a constant game of who's on top that never ends and we have to always think of it that way. Unless the standard is to never allow a practice to stop evolving. No resting on laurels allowed.

(51,129 posts)The way the response strategy works is to supply the phish request with a false password, than observe the server log and note the IP of the person using the false password to attempt access. That then gives you connection evidence for the e-mail phish, linking the two.
The other trap is to place false information on the server which if distributed is a criminal act, same crime as falsifying the data and then distributing it.
That said, Wikileaks is probably dissembling and outright lying. Are we to believe that had the leaked docs for the same amount of time as Macron did? The docs were hacked in advance of the leak, so the hackers had more time with the docs than the campaign had to search the leaked material for bogus material. [center]
Is there also also false information planted in the leak to point guilt at someone not guilty?

It is difficult to believe the Russian NSA would leave this evidence trail to one of their operatives in plain sight. The use of Russian Excel does not mean that the Russian government did this.
Why would Wikileaks want to implicate the Russians when Wikileaks now is the Russians? This stinks of Republicans and, in particular, alt-right Trumpsters.

(1,717 posts)The leaks showed almost zero wrong-doing except for a slight
finger on the scales for HRC - which of course Bernie saw and
concluded that it did not rise to the level of illegality or immorality.
(And I write this as a Bernie supporter.)
It was the MEDIA that made the leaks a huge deal, when actually
it was a huge nothing burger.
Did it affect the election? Certainly, but only because the media
made it into something that it was not.
Apparently, it is the same with Marron - the headlines scream
"Email Hack" with ZERO attention to what they contain.
And again, we have ZERO evidence of wrong-doing.

It looked like, and almost certainly was, a last-minute bid to tip the scales in favor of the centrist Macrons opponent, the nativist, populist Marine Le Pen, who has received more-than-tacit endorsements from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who received her at the Kremlin, and U.S. President Donald Trump, who has declared his appreciation of her as the strongest candidate.
