It's not really incredulous that the coward would use that as an excuse. He wouldn't tell the truth and say if was because he's getting too close on the Russian collusion.

Whitehouse on Rachel was talking about how it was conceivable that Rosenstein had been upset about it for months and been looking into it. But even then, the timing is so damned suspicious! If it's an attempt to discredit Comey before his testimony, they should have done it a long time ago. All this suggests to me that The Don plays everything by ear and doesn't plan further ahead than a couple of days. He's relying on the GOP to cover his ass each time, and, hopefully, some of them will get tired of doing so.
