Bob Kerrey challenged Deb Fischer on Thursday to a Senate race debate on health care.

“Health care is a crucial issue to Nebraska,” said Kerrey, a Democrat, speaking at a press conference in west Omaha. “Debates inform the citizens.”

Fischer, the Republican he’s running against, has expressed ardent opposition to the federal health care law that for the most part was upheld last week by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Fischer already turned down an invitation from Dr. Richard O’Brien, professor emeritus at Creighton University, to participate with Kerrey in a forum focused on health care.
