The young man had just scored a touchdown in a Bellevue East High football game.

Instead of jogging to the sideline, Ryan David put his hands at the back of his helmet, signaling for the crowd to scream louder.

That was in the mid-1990s. David was a running back for the Chieftains.

“He ran a few hills for that one,” said Jerry Lovell, then a Bellevue East assistant football coach. “It was kind of a funny deal.”
