As President Obama's motorcade rolled across the Ohio-Pennsylvania border, his campaign informed reporters that in Pittsburgh they would be treated to cookies from Bethel Bakery in Bethel Park, Pa., a locally-famous establishment whose 15 minutes of campaign fame followed an unfortunate description of them by Obama¹s GOP rival, Mitt Romney.
"I'm not sure about these cookies," Romney said in April upon being presented the sugary delights. "They don¹t look like you made them. No, no. They came from the local 7-Eleven, bakery, or whatever."
Offended, the Bethel Bakery proprietor ran a Cookiegate special: six free with the purchase of a dozen. After she initially protested to the press, she told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette she meant no offense.
"I was a little shocked," Julie Lytle, the store's marketing assistant told the paper. "I didn't think too much of it at the time, and I didn't think it would blow up like it has. We decided to have fun with it and not to get offended."
Obama's campaign aides rubbed in Romney¹s snub Friday.
"Waiting for the press in Pittsburgh... Cookies from Bethel Bakery," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki wrote on Twitter. "Another difference with Romney. We love their cookies."

(6,440 posts)You'd expect him to be the sort of person who had etiquette lessons from the age of three. I hate to sound like a monarchist, but could you imagine a member of Britain's royal family, even one as whiny and entitled as Prince Chuck, making a comment like that?

I guess some things just can't be taught, like how to talk to the common folk without looking like a condescending ass.

(17,188 posts)See, what you do is get the Million Moms to whip up a batch of toothsome, delectable delights (or have your servants do it). Go to the next campaign event. Then, just toss him some respectable, republican cookies when he starts to speak.
I've even got a name for it:
Toss Your Cookies For Romney!
You're welcome.

(95,337 posts)And it's those customs that gauge just how well adapted a politician might be.
Those cookies could have been made with dog crap but someone should have advised Romney about the cookies so he could have taken a bite and declare that they were wonderful.
I still remember the shock years ago when John Kerry showed up in Philadelphia and was taken to Pat's Steak down in South Philly. That's a fun lil tradition that Philly does with visiting politicians. If you visit Pat's Steaks or Gino's (across the street) you'll see photos of the politicians that have visited before including ones of Bill Clinton. Thing is, no one prepped Kerry on how to properly order a cheesesteak and well, Kerry shocked the city when he asked for a hoagie and if they had swiss cheese.
It's the lil things that will endear a politicians to the voters. Clinton always rocked in that area and Obama has done pretty well.
I can't imagine anyone losing an election because they disparaged some cookies or ordered a cheesesteak incorrectly but enough of these lil whoopsies doesn't look good for a candidate.
