I voted for Trump. Now he wants to cut the aid I need

by Heather Long @byHeatherLong
May 24, 2017: 10:41 AM ET

Krista Shockey voted for President Trump in November. Now she's one of the people who might get hurt under his plan to cut safety net programs for the poor and disabled.

Shockey is on Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a program to help low-income Americans who are disabled. The monthly payment is just over $700 a month. "It's my only income," Shockey told CNNMoney in the fall, when we first met her at Diner 23 in Waverly, a small town in southern Ohio that's seen better days. "I couldn't live" without it.

She was stunned to hear the president wants to downsize SSI. She hadn't heard about it until CNNMoney called her.

When releasing Trump's budget Tuesday, the White House hailed it as a "taxpayer first" plan. Trump's goal is to get millions of people off welfare and into full-time jobs. For Shockey, that won't be easy.

"There's no way I could go back to work," Shockey said this week. "I've got a lot of problems. I'm crippled in my feet, knees, back, hands."

Forewarn ignoramuses like Ms. Shockey that this is what will happen, as far back as a year ago or more. To a person, that crowd was unable to review drumpfs and the gop's history to gather some sense of what the future will bring. They refused, or were incapable of rubbing together 2 brain cells to generate some reason, logic and common sense. They let the RW noise machine, as well as their own built in bias's and prejudices tell them drumpf would be good for the country, despite the overwhelming stacks of evidence to the contrary.

I am thrilled these cretins will reap what they've sewn, but regret the rest of us will also share that shit sammitch.

Krista Shockey of Ohio cried when we asked her, “Have you lived the American Dream?”
"She’s disabled now and can’t find work. She had three children, but one daughter died at a young age. Krista currently cares for her elderly mom because money is tight. “Lots of businesses have closed up here. People have lost their jobs. This used to be a city. Fri May 26, 2017, 02:47 PM
May 2017

This woman voted for someone widely known for decades as a con man, a liar, a cheat, a bankrupt and a buffoon.

This woman voted for someone who personally displayed cruelty, ignorance and rage during his campaign appearances, and who showed no grasp whatsoever of economics, politics, international relations or any of the other realities that are heart of the president's job.

She couldn't be bothered or couldn't find the time - any time at ALL - in an election cycle that lasted the better part of two years to inform herself on candidates, issues and the realities of governing. And she couldn't be bothered or find time to learn anything in an age when information and news and analysis has never been more accessible.

She voted for someone who promised to torture POWs, promised to build an enormous, useless wall, promised to deport tens of millions of Americans, promised to jail his opponent in the general election.

She voted for sociopathy, greed, venality and crime. She voted for someone who vowed to hurt people. She voted for someone whose legislative plans will hurt tens of millions of people - financially and physically. And lo and behold, as it turns out, those t4ens of millions include her.

She voted for cruelty. Now she's hurt and confused and mystified by what Her Guy is doing.

Gee, I wonder why.

This "they" you mention is at war with us; they seek to erase not just the "far out leftist", but anybody they deem liberal, and any person who is too 'different' for their tastes or deviates too far away from their version of normality (Which is them). And by erase, I mean from the public discourse, but a small but growing faction (In particular, the Adam Lanza and Dylann Roof Wannabes AKA the "alt-right&quot aims to literally erase us.

It's time to fight back. When the Krista Shockley-type people of the US renounce their support of Trump and start speaking out against the psychopathic movement they helped to create then I can picture people here being supportive of her, until then, how do we know they're not just going to go back to supporting cuts against the poor and minorities as long as it doesn't affect them?

I'll be living with the consequences, too.

The GOP took great advantage of their power to deny SSI recipients increases in payments during Obama's presidency. It was raised every yr. during the Bush admin. This was by design with the knowledge that the less educated voters only blame the president. Keeping the tax cuts and bailouts were criticized a lot even here. It's hard for people to see nuance when they have an emotional reaction.

I have a friend who voted for Hillary, and also said "at least he talks about poverty." I can't relate because I was unwilling to listen to him at all. So, I don't know what he said that made people think that. In retrospect I think it's worth remembering that while he's no serious actor, he does have some training in that realm.

I try to keep in mind that most people don't follow politics as closely as I do. I don't want to see people suffer, but I do hope they will learn.

Liberals have deluded themselves for centuries that people like this will see the light and vote their own rational self-interest. They never do. No matter how badly the suffer, they will blame it on the 'others.' It won't even be a tortured rationalization; it will be an uninformed don't-care-about-them-facts statement. And if things get so bad that a small handful of them like this woman vote in desperation for 'the other,' they will be back to voting against their self-interest by the following election.
