Gianforte has outlined his position on retirement by using the Biblical example of Noah. He said:
"There's nothing in the Bible that talks about retirement. And yet it's been an accepted concept in our culture today. Nowhere does it say, 'Well, he was a good and faithful servant, so he went to the beach... The example I think of is Noah. How old was Noah when he built the ark? 600. He wasn't like, cashing Social Security checks, he wasn't hanging out, he was working. So, I think we have an obligation to work. The role we have in work may change over time, but the concept of retirement is not biblical."[52][53][54][55]

And people still voted for him?
Did anyone from the media question him about this?
Did his opponent use this in attack ads?
Aren't a lot of his voters probably drawing SS and Medicare?
Yes, yes we know from his bio he opposes abortion, gay marriage, legal marijuana, sanctuary cities (I bet he doesn't even know wtf that means), and higher minimum wages - that's standard oath-taking for GOPers. But SS and Medicare should be deal breakers with the voters.

Gianforte was especially angry with the press because they were reporting he was telling his voters he'd protect the healthcare coverage they currently have and also telling lobbyists he would have voted for the extreme house bill that would have gutted the ACA.

(182,829 posts)Now it is true that I believe this country is following a dangerous trend when it permits too great a degree of centralization of governmental functions. I oppose thisin some instances the fight is a rather desperate one. But to attain any success it is quite clear that the Federal government cannot avoid or escape responsibilities which the mass of the people firmly believe should be undertaken by it. The political processes of our country are such that if a rule of reason is not applied in this effort, we will lose everythingeven to a possible and drastic change in the Constitution. This is what I mean by my constant insistence upon moderation in government. Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas.4 Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

(58,785 posts)themselves extremely powerful. One bloc alone among a number of them, the Kochs', is believed to rival the Republican Party in influence. The so-called Freedom Caucus represents their wishes in Congress. They, of course, want to destroy these programs in their entirety, while virtually all of today's conservatives in congress also support some rollback anywhere from merely serious, permanent cutbacks to complete repeal.
Together, which they currently are, they are a redoubtable force. If they get control of SCOTUS, they will try to get compulsory taxation needed for most government programs, federal, state, and local, declared unconstitutional. Including even public education.
The only thing stopping the Koch caucus having its way, forcing extreme destruction, not just partial gutting, right now, of course, is 2018 and 2020.

(58,785 posts)in its origin back to the influx of money by Pennsylvania's Richard Mellon Scaif. Not their first enemy, of course, but probably the first ultraconservative billionaire to invest huge money and organization to destroy Bill while he was still in Arkansas. Scaife was politically naïve, a redneck-level billionaire who only met Clinton toward the end of his life and was agreeably surprised to like him. Nevertheless, his evil influence lives on after his death through his foundations. In 2016 Judicial Watch boasted of having 5 Hillary "scandals" all ready to launch. Her defeat must have been a real blow to their "relevance" and cushy income stream. No doubt they'll come around.
And, of course, those others mentioned, the four, and others still, had long ago committed to change our national thinking far to the right. Thanks for that article, Underpants. I hadn't seen it before, but it is well supported by other reputable sources, including Jane Mayer.

(269 posts)These people will not learn until they stop receiving money and things they need to survive. They have been absolutely brainwashed by this "Get off your ass and work" mentality. Too stupid to see that socialized governments around the world are doing far better than they are. To the folks who think retirement is as easy as stuffing money into RRSPs and savings accounts: you have obviously never been hit with unexpected financial hardships, rising living costs that prevent you from saving, or divorce. Jesus Christ, how are pensioners supposed to plan for these things? How are people who grew up at a time when college was either not a possibility or a necessity supposed to reverse time and pick a life that would have made them more well-off? This is unspeakably cruel.
It's sad that their hard work will never pay off... and they've been too brainwashed to ever understand it. My dad survives on a Canada pension. If he didn't have that, he'd still be working... with high blood pressure, diabetes and 75 years old. What the fuck is wrong with people who think this is honourable?

(22,976 posts)Some would peel away, maybe, but most of these people just don't care. They belong to a death-cult now. "What's the Matter With Kansas?" was written in 2004, a cautionary tale about this kind of backward thinking while the infrastructure collapses around you. That was 13 years ago, and things have NOT improved.
I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but this is unreal to watch.

The man sold his software company to McAfee for 10,000,000 dollars and then sold his second computer company to Oracle $1.5 billion, his wife has another company. Something about education. He should be a out of touch Republican who doesn't care about the peasants.
Maybe Montanans deserve to lose their special carve out Medicare millions from the ACA.

Gianforte is a believer in Young Earth creationism, the belief that the Earth is less than 10,000 years old. He donated $1.5 million to the Glendive Dinosaur and Fossil Museum in Glendive, Montana, a creationist museum which teaches visitors that evolution is false, the Earth is about 6,000-6,400 years old, that dinosaurs were on the Ark and that they likely died out 4,300 years ago during the flood described in the Book of Genesis

As long as they think that they personally will be better off, they are for it.
As long as they think that the impending suffering will hit somebody else, they are for it.
As long as the liberals/Democrats are for it, they are against it.

Sounds like at least the Jewish parts of the Bible endorse the idea of taking a rest from labors and enjoying life after financially establishing oneself. That kind of sounds like the modern idea of retirement to me.

(368 posts)of Trump fucking up and Democrats going into these communities and hearing what people have to say. I heard on CNN that Trump's approval rating is higher in this state (closer to 50%) than it is across the country. Instead of a quick fix in some of these rural areas, I think we have to realize that Trump is still popular in these areas and it will take longer to turn it around- which means we need to go into these areas and create a solid rural strategy.
I would also like to see Democrats go on the attack more. There was a while there were outside groups were constantly attacking Quist and there was silence from the national Dem groups in attacking Gianforte. We have to realize that while the "when they go, we go high" thing sounds nice, it doesn't work in politics. When they go low, we need to take them out at the knees. It's war.
