However, I am open to changing my opinion.

I need to research my WWII history abt the German press...

(47,209 posts)just like bankers have been for centuries. I'm surprised anyone missed that.

(37,457 posts)The rest I was not aware of. I'm actually happy I was not aware of the media, academia and Hollywood stereotypes, but now my ignorance has been relieved.

(47,209 posts)people! Think about their distain for the professional class- people who get extra educated and do well without taking short cuts, play nice with others, think for themselves and are generous and creative. (Only "hard work" - with muscles, should be rewarded) They despise everything about that - it's part of what Donald represents to them- that ignorance and greed are good. They fucking hate anyone generous or intellectual and successful- they want to bully them into loserdom.

(37,457 posts)I'm obviously ignorant about anti-semitism. I wasn't raised to be bigoted towards Jewish people. I know a lot about Nazis, but they talked about bankers, from what I remember.

(47,209 posts)to have been raised in a really diverse area where such issues are raised and discussed instead of ignored. It's harder when it's your friends and neighbors being demonized. You don't join in with the derision of microagressions when you realize they are the background noise we have to live with.

(53,959 posts)Anti-Semitism is one of the only "core" bigotries which often gets a pass because it is so misunderstood and most people have no knowledge as to the reality of anti-Semitism. The profound ignorance which surrounds anti-Semitism is actually, IMO, quite staggering and bewildering, given the long, well-documented, and blatant history of it.

(36,108 posts)Well said
And for too many people, WWII movies not only explain anti-Semitism but also prove it's something from the past

(53,959 posts)As you will see, many don't like anti-Semitism to even be discussed, much less elevated to a "serious" problem.

(53,959 posts)In case you don't know why the "banker" is associated with Jews, it goes back to the Middle Ages and usury laws. Though, the "cheap Jew" and "money grubbing Jew" goes back as far as Rome. As for the "media Jew", that is a bit newer on the history timeline. Jews were prohibited from holding certain jobs, so many started their own businesses, one such business was newspapers. Eventually a few Jews made it big, and when any minority makes it big, even if there are only a few of them, then a stereotype is born. The "Hollywood Jew" came about when Jews started investing in, directing, and producing movies, again, because they weren't allowed in certain fields, and this was a field without hiring regulations and restrictions. The lack of opportunity forced many Jews to make their own opportunities, and in doing so, especially when they succeeded, many assigned a nefarious reason to their success...thus was born, "the Jews run the media".
ETA: Jews are also associated with liberals, communists, socialists, and other so-called "malcontents". The Civil Rights movement is "blamed" on the Jews, not just in this country, but elsewhere as well. We are accused of pushing social movements in order to "overthrow" current governments.

(37,457 posts)As I said in another post, I know a lot about WW2 Nazis but my memory only recalled them lambasting bankers.

(53,959 posts)If interested, you can read Anti-Semitism: One Jew's perspective about recent events (long read), which is something I wrote a few months back. I have actually studied anti-Semitism, and done scads of presentations at universities on the topic, so it isn't just because I am Jewish that "I know" anti-Semitism; I have actually studied it.

(3,675 posts)STILL be on the receiving end of antisemitism as well. I saw people here on DU claim no way Bernie Sanders could be the victim of antisemitism because he is non practicing or an atheist.
Behind the Aegis
(53,959 posts)I think many don't understand anti-Semitism because they don't understand what "Jewish" means. Unlike almost all other religions, Jewish can indicate an ethnicity. It would have been easier if at some point in history it was "Hebrew" for the ethnic designation, and "Jewish" for the religion, but that didn't happen. Frankly, some people dismissed the anti-Semitism because they, themselves, are anti-Semites, and others dismissed it because he is a white man, and that he was also a minority was a problem for them.

Have you ever encountered anti-Semitism as a wrestler or in the NFL?
I have never, ever, received any taunts or any form of anti-Semitism. And I suppose being a Jewish football player with the Atlanta Falcons was no different than being a Baptist football player with the Atlanta Falcons. But in the back of your mind, you always expect something to happen. You know, when you run out of the tunnel as Goldberg in front of thousands of deep-rooted Southern fans who traditionally might not be quite so accepting of someone of my background. But people are often surprised when I say Ive not experienced anti-Semitism.
Then again, youre built like a house.
[Laughs.] Well, yes, that may have something to do with it, too.

(53,959 posts)Google.
The stereotype in play ISN'T who is and isn't a Jew, but rather the bigoted belief that Jews CONTROL the media, and attacks on "liberal media" usually has an anti-Semitic undertone to it.
(On a side note, I REALLY miss italics and bold. )

(47,209 posts)And the WASP elite always made sure they realized they were just there to educate and entertain. It's always been a noticeable thing. I'm surprised people are unaware- is it becasue they didn't grow up around Jews or notice the endless references about their culture? Anyone growing up in NYC will tell you the same.

(51,129 posts)If only we could simplify things, but we delude ourselves when we do. Life isn't simple.
Othering is a far more useful simplification than antisemitism. There is us and there are 'others' is one of the worst of false simplifications. There are no races, just humans with limitations in their ability to understand the world and a tendency to try to simply the world to accomplish that.
