General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDo you guys know what happened in Portland last night? Is it just being overshadowed by Russiagate?
So I posted this earlier this morning and it hardly got any interest:

2 Men Killed On Portland Train After Trying To Stop Anti-Muslim Rant
So obviously Russia-gate is a much bigger deal and naturally would garner much more attention on DU, but still I was surprised at how little interest or response there was. It's a really big deal here in Portland and has shaken people up.
So my honest question is, do people know about it? Is it just a big deal here because it always has more impact when it happens close by? And people's attention is on Russiagate with so much happening with that?

(9,525 posts)and found this article this AM and checked latest but things are happening to fast now with Russia and the European trip, so many threads being posted so fast, that I guess I didn't check far enough back.

(1,129 posts)It is always of widespread significance when tragedy strikes as a result of hatred and intolerance.
And, to some extent, there is always more local coverage of & response to tragic events because of the increased degree of personal impact felt by the immediate community members.
It may also be of greater local significance if the community is not accustomed to hate-based acts of domestic terrorism Or is not accustomed to violent acts resulting in multiple murders.
So, IMHO, the number of responses your earlier post received is not due to a lack of awareness nor due to a lack of concern, outrage, or compassion on the part of the DU community.
And, honestly, I would find it alarming if the DU response were equal to or greater than that of the immediate local community.
(I realize this may not have been the response you were seeking...
but it is an objective analysis of the factors related to your concerns)
