The Trump White House has been the most scandal-plagued of any new administration in recent history, and its starting to wear down Republicans on Capitol Hill.
The Atlantics Molly Ball talked with several Republicans in Congress and on K Street, and she came away with the impression that many of them are resigned to the fact that their agenda is going to get swallowed up by assorted Trump scandals.
One Republican House staffer told Ball that while some Republicans think they can fight through the Trump crisis, another group simply believes that Trumps presidency is doomed to a long slow death.
This is like Reservoir Dogs, the staffer said, referring to the Quentin Tarantino movie in which the majority of the main characters die at each others hands. Everyone ends up dead on the floor. Similarly, one Republican lobbyist told Ball that the constant drumbeat of scandals might ensure some GOP lawmakers decide to throw in the towel instead of running for new terms.
You finally have united Republican government, and this is as good as it gets? he asked. Why bother? A malaise is setting in. And finally, one staffer for a GOP senator who did not support Trump this past fall explained that no one should be surprised that things are going so badly for Trump so soon.
We didnt have high expectations, so were not disappointed, the staffer said. We tried to warn you.

(15,543 posts)Do your job republicans. You are not supposed to sit around lamely feeling "resigned" - meekly Assuming the Position for the casino-bred cabal of comrades, and submissively accepting the Acts of War* being perpetrated on the USA while you sip cocktails poolside enjoy puffing bootleg Cuban cigars with your man pals.
Deplorable.

(99,710 posts)This is a great analogy and funny as Hell:
The White House had not been giving them much to go on to answer all those unpleasant questions: The previous days list of talking points issued to congressional Republicans urged them to take up the presidents claim that the leaks were the real scandal. The document included a numbered section entitled Top Ten Politically Motivated Criminal Leaks of Classified Information. (A House Republican staffer likened this defense to Its not that Im beating my wife, its that my kids are telling the cops about it.) But now they could simply say that the whole thing was out of their hands.

(9,247 posts)trying to get rid of TRUMP.
That means NOT allowing him to get away with the numerous US laws, ethics rules and the constitutional violations he breaks EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY SINCE BEING SWORN IN.
That means going after him with a VENGEANCE to have him REMOVED from the WH.
That will be their ONLY option and when they get THAT done the stinking, putrid, America-hating, greed-driven Republican "brand" will be so destroyed they STILL won't be able to get much done (nevermind most of America doesn't want their deadly agenda foisted upon their lives).
All I can say is they got THEMSELVES into this mess and every day that goes by that Republicans lie supine and do nothing amidst the DISASTER that is the Trump presidency, the further into the DITCH they drive themselves.
GOOD. If there is any GOOD in all this - it's that.

(26,293 posts)order him to sign it.
He could literally do a Dick Cheney and shoot an unarmed grandmother in a wheelchair in the face on national TV and they still wouldnt vote to impeach him as long as he remains useful to them.

(28,270 posts)How many of these sad panda republicans publicly condemned their newest member who assaulted a news reporter for asking him a question about Trumpcare?
How many of them praised the two heroes on the Portland train that were killed by a white supremacist?
How many condemned Twitler for shitting all over the NATO alliance?
The republican party is a cancer on America.

(7,432 posts)The GOP is all about "winning" at any cost. This time, they paid too much to win, and they're now regretting their hubris. Frankly, they deserve the humiliation and outrage they're getting, and hopefully, they'll be disgraced for decades. Oh, and let's not forget the federal RICO case against the GOP leadership, eh? You know, the one about Russian (laundered) money pouring into several GOP campaigns in 2016.

(49,002 posts)Republicons are going to suddenly rush to dump toxic tRump who is eating away at their brand. Especially if Democrats do a good job of irrevocably tying him to the GOP Republican Party. It won't happen immediately but definitely soon enough before the 2018 elections so that Republicons feel they have a last chance to salvage their seats.

(2,674 posts)It's time that the Republicans in Congress call it what it is - TREASON. Need to shut up the talkie, talk and grow some balls and do the right thing for America. Impeach the orange grifter and kick his family and buddies out of Washington.

(888 posts)The Republicans swallowed their pride, crushed their hypocrisy monitor, sold their soul to the devil,
to take one swing for the fences. And now it looks like they're not even going to get any more at-bats,
three strikeouts, and even the bat boy is afraid to come back out on the field. This is huge.
Conservative stalwarts warned the Republican Party DON'T OPEN THE DOOR and now the back draft is going to consume the whole party.

on and on I honestly thought it would take longer, but when people look at healthcare + tax reform. They see the wealthy screwing their base. When they lose the rednecks, it's over.
Reporters, should put a mic in the face of every Republican and ask, is this your idea of Republicanism

(5,801 posts)So--a government-hating bunch of extremist crackpots and shills for the wealthy turn out to be incompetent at governing. When you take a group that has little experience governing, giving them power does not confer expertise. Especially when led by a man-child with no interest in running things well or learning how to do so.
They don't care about the country--other than as an ATM for them and their contributors--and it shows.
Nothing to hide behind now.
