Thought it was highly rated and now I'm learning that Charity Watch gives it a "C."

(3,867 posts)celebrities spoke for it on TV & it was a sham. Hardly any money went to the wounded & lots of stuff they couldn't even use. Be careful, you want your money to go where it does good, not pad pockets of the likes of trump.
Celebrities get fooled too.

(7,506 posts)Wounded Warrior carried on fuel funny car Jack Beckman that races NHRA. Runs out of Don Schumaker stable. Supposedly car itself is sponsored by a lady that comes from oil money. Also sponsors Tommy Johnson Make A Wish car.
flotsam
(3,268 posts)Americans donate hundreds of millions of dollars each year to the charity, expecting their money will help some of the 52,000 wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.
But CBS News found Wounded Warrior Project spends 40 to 50 percent on overhead, including extravagant parties. Other veterans charities have overhead costs of 10 to 15 percent.

(58,670 posts)I guess mostly because they advertised too much. That always bothers me from a "non-profit" organization.
Seems from comments above I was right to be cynical about it.

(50,955 posts)pep talk and the phone number to another veteran's organization that actually helped veterans.
And Wounded Warrior gets TONS of money.

(46,736 posts)I donated because an old friend donated to it, so I thought it was the right thing to do. It occurred to me afterwards to check. Just figures. My friend is pretty well off and doesn't need the money, so I'm guessing he doesn't have any clue that it's a bad charity.

(26,582 posts)They spend an exorbitant amount on overhead including extravagant parties for their staff.
There are much better charities that assist with veterans.

I personally know a young man that received new legs. Went to an event in Nashville for him, and 100s of other Warriors just like him, and their families.
Charity is a personal decision and commitment, in my opinion.
And, from Charity Watch, which gives them an A, not a C.

Edit: the family support division gets the A, not the Project itself, which is correct at C.

Not the "Wounded Warrior Project."

(33,956 posts)He is a wounded warrior. He mostly gets sporting event tickets, etc. which were most likely donated instead of cash. As far as I know he hasn't received anything else from them.
