Billionaire Michael Bloomberg has offered $15 million to UN efforts to tackle climate change after President Donald Trump announced he is pulling the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord.
The money would support the operations of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Executive Secretariat, "including its work to help countries implement their commitments under the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change," Bloomberg Philanthropies said in a statement late Thursday.
"Americans are not walking away from the Paris Climate Agreement," Michael Bloomberg said. "Just the opposite - we are forging ahead."

"Most of us who have created a business know that we're only as good as the way our employees, clients and partners view us," Bloomberg explained. "Most of us don't pretend we're smart enough to make every big decision by ourselves. And most of us who have our names on the door know that we are only as good as our word, but not Donald Trump."
Bloomberg ripped Trump's business history, including his multiple bankruptcies and approximately 3,500 lawsuits. The current Bloomberg LP CEO also added that he didn't need a million dollar check from his father to start his company.
"Trump says he wants to run the nation like he's run his business. God help us. I'm a New Yorker, and I know a con when I see one."

(81,458 posts)Let's hope so. Let's see them put their money where their mouths are, the way Bloomberg just did.
What I wish they all would understand - this is THEIR planet, too. THEY TOO have to breathe the air, drink the water, eat the food grown in the dirt - that may or may not be overwhelmed by toxins and chemicals and reckless short-sighted short-term-gain/hit 'n' run agribusiness strategies.
And okay - so they may be able to buy their way around it with all their money. Okay, go drink the carefully-bottled water and expensive specially-designed water filtration systems that some can afford to install in their homes. Okay, breathe carefully filtered and conditioned air (or buy special breathing devices or oxygen rooms or whatever-the-hell will be needed in the future), or buy yourself an island to hide on, but you'll still wind up paying more and more and more for those artificial supports, and your "safe" little island will be surrounded by a poisoned ocean full of plastic shit and chemical contamination. You think your money will buy you safety and immunity. And it may.
For awhile.
But time is not on your side any more than it's on our side. And time is running out. And it doesn't matter how fervently you deny reality or do the ostrich thing - keeping your head stuck in the sand so you don't have to see what the reality is all around you. That reality won't go away either.
And as wealthy as some of 'em are, they CANNOT just go out and buy themselves a nice clean new habitable planet.

But then again maybe someone else will see this.............
Take a look who is head of the EPA. That should discourage that notion in a second.
It should go, if at all, to an international organization, and one whose cost/efficiency ratio has been vetted. Ten years ago, Bill Clinton lamented that while he was in office, about 25% of the money allocated for various government aid organizations went for costs. By the time he had founded the CGI, costs were down to about 4%. Asked how come there was such a discrepancy. Clinton said immediately, "because we were stupid, that's why!" We all wanted to laugh, but he was being dead serious.
calimary
(81,458 posts)From this day forward, the effort should be focused on getting around the EPA.
Defying the EPA.
Subverting the EPA.
Rendering the EPA irrelevant.
Replacing the EPA (and not with another government entity - especially with THESE assholes in charge, but OUTSIDE "government" structures).
If the EPA won't be helpful, if the EPA won't be part of this, then the EPA must be declared irrelevant, and left behind.
My dog may want to linger and smell that other poo pile or the wadded up lunch-truck trash that somebody just left lying around. But I know we need to move on, so I tell her to "Leave it!" and we move on to the better things I have that I can give her to sniff at, and eat.
We need to say "Leave it!" to this EPA, and White House.
At this writing, I see Scott Pruitt at the lectern at today's White House press briefing. What I've noticed about him is - he's another one of those fast-talkers. He's nothing but yet another fast-talking slicky-boy CON-jobber salesman.

In fact, there was a NYT article back in 1990 that described this very behavior as his casinos were steadily losing money and his debt had mounted.
[*** An Empire at Risk - Trump's Atlantic City; Debt Forcing Trump to Play for Higher Stakes
By DIANA B. HENRIQUES with M. A. FARBER
Published: June 7, 1990
<...>
A Risk-Filled Business
In the seven months since a freak helicopter accident robbed him of his top casino executives, Mr. Trump has for the first time become directly involved in running these complex operations with thousands of employees, where management risk is as ever-present as chance at the gaming tables.
Since then, his casinos have been undermined by an exodus of senior managers, some of whom were dismissed and others who left complaining of Mr. Trump's overbearing and idiosyncratic style. Surviving staff members complain of low morale. Bills are not being paid on time, vendors say. And state regulators, growing more concerned, have stepped up a broad inquiry into all his holdings.
<...>
''Let me tell you my biggest strength that nobody knows,'' Mr. Trump said. ''My biggest strength is that I get the best people for the job. People want to work for me. Trump does well with management.'' Others are not so sure. Mr. Trump is praised by some as an imaginative but conservative real estate developer and a wily negotiator who, as one longtime associate said, ''never lets you know the facts.'' But his skill as the chief executive of a day-to-day business, now employing about 15,000 people, is a question mark.
Since he took a more direct hand in his casino operations late last year, he has fired a number of senior managers. Others have walked out in disgust. ''I simply didn't want to work for Donald Trump any longer,'' said Jack O'Donnell, the former president of the Trump Plaza and a well-regarded gaming industry executive who quit last month. Mr. Trump has lashed out publicly at his own top aides in press interviews and on television, balked at complying with severance agreements and appointed executives to positions for which they seem to have little relevant experience. The result has been a level of friction that has become the talk of the industry - and that has made it increasingly hard for him to recruit managers. ''People who work there are terrified,'' one regulator said. ''People are hiding under their desks.''

(13,783 posts)I'm proud of Americans who refuse to let important causes fall by the wayside, from Bloomberg to the local soup kitchen. But I'm ambivalent because this has been the Republican agenda all along. At least the agenda of good people who happen to be Republicans. Yes, I know some. They want the private sector to take on the burden of sharing the wealth, and are willing to pitch in at their churches and homeless shelters to do it. I want government to be organized so that no one is left unprotected. I don't want to devolve to a place where we show government "isn't needed."
But, for the short term, GO MR. BLOOMBERG. I don't want to be Susan Sarandon and choose suicide to make a point.

(35,454 posts)California, New York and Washington Have United to Back the Paris Climate Accord
(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) Three Democratic governors said Thursday they won't let the U.S. back away from a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, despite President Donald Trump decision to withdraw from an international pact.
"This is an insane move by this president," California Gov. Jerry Brown said, blasting the decision as "deviant behavior from the highest office in the land."
Brown joined Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington state and Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York to form the U.S. Climate Alliance to uphold the Paris climate agreement, a pact involving nearly 200 nations aimed at slowing the warming of the planet.
The three states already belong to an emissions reduction pact of states and cities worldwide, but Thursday's action marked a direct stand against the Trump administration and a formal commitment to upholding the targets of the Paris agreement.
Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy and Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe also expressed interest in joining the new pact.
