time to change a number in the stored data so the machine won't recognize him/her.

I don't think it will change much. They'll either find a way to screw up the identification process or just switch to another form of cheating.

I'm not that cynical, the purgers are just that vile.

I agree that the Republicans will always try to disenfranchise the poor, minorities, students, and other traditional democratic voting blocks, but there will eventually be a point where the public won't support such efforts anymore. A national ID system, one not run by the states and is therefore less subject to party whims, would go a long way towards deflating the most common GOP lies about voter fraud. They will come up with other lies, of course, but fewer Americans will believe them.
