Some homeowners have reason to celebrate feeling blue.
Homes with blue bathrooms specifically light shades like powder blue or periwinkle fetched $5,400 more than expected when sold, according to a paint color analysis from real estate website Zillow. The analysis looked at more than 32,000 sold homes, comparing the sales prices of ones painted certain color versus similar properties that had white walls.
Blue paint isnt just effective at boosting a homes selling price when used in a bathroom though. Dining rooms painted in darker blue hues will cause a house sell for $1,926 more than anticipated on average, while homes with light blue kitchens and blue bedrooms will garner a price that is $1,809 higher than expected.
Other colors that increased home prices included grays and beiges. Painting walls in fresh, natural-looking colors, particularly in shades of blue and pale gray not only make a home feel larger, but also are neutral enough to help future buyers envision themselves living in the space, said Zillow chief economist Svenja Gudell in the report.

(15,412 posts)I'm not a fan of blue, it is really harder to decorate with than a neutral color or even a great shade of green. Blue is cold. Paint a small room in warm colors (my bathroom is orange...yep...orange) and it will be more inviting.

(10,021 posts)Lighter colors make rooms appear more spacious and can easily be painted over. They are also easier to live with for potential new owners still deciding what colors they might eventually want.
Clean and decluttered is worth more than a coat of paint, but if you are repainting just to sell, going with the advice of agents in your market area for what colors "sell" is still a good idea.

(4,512 posts)Just go to Homegoods and check out the colors of the furnishings, including linens, lamps, rugs, etc. 80% are some shade of blue.
I've never been a blue fan. Makes me blue. Soft sage greens are my thing.

(3,447 posts)...and safety. Too dark, however, and it can trigger depression (as can pale green). I wouldn't use a dark blue north of the Mason-Dixon because of winter and the Vitamin D problem, but an airy blue would be lovely.
I've always been a hunter green lover myself. Green is a good complement color of blue and is the color of compassion, nature, and the heart itself. There's a reason we tell people to 'go green'.
Fascinating article. The bathroom one really surprises me.
