(20,136 posts)The whole purpose of the ban, supposedly, was that it was going to be temporary to give them time to come up with a plan for "extreme vetting."
If the "extreme vetting" is already happening, then that rationale is moot now. The public rationale, anyway, because the real rationale was always bigotry.

(34,082 posts)which is a distinct concept from the travel ban.
Even when there is an express provision permitting expedited processing of visas for people who have visited the named countries (like providing humanitarian aid under the auspices of a recognized charitable/governmental entity), who are entering the country on official business (like to go to the UN) they are taking their merry time to vet and grant visas.
My Finnish sister who traveled to Somalia for an international health organziation, and was expected to come to the US for business at the UN may have missed her last opportunity to visit my parents because her Visa application was not processed as provided in the regulations - because she had set foot in Somalia as part of her public health job.

(2,533 posts)Ms. Toad
(34,082 posts)She was good enough to come to the US to spend a year as an exchange student in high school (hence my Finnish sister) and she's spent her life working to improve health care for people all over the globe - including in places the orange menace hates.
Never had a problem with getting a Visa before. This one was applied for well within the time frames corresponding to the formal (UN) reason for her visit, but never got processed. The first appointment available for a tourist Visa was August (she was supposed to be here in May).
Finland is not on any sort of terror watch list - it was purely that her humanitarian aid work took her to Somalia.

May 1, 2017:
"During an interview with Fox News to discuss his first 100 days as president, Trump denounced the constitutional system of checks and balances as archaic.
Its a very rough system. Its an archaic system, Trump said. Its really a bad thing for the country.

(85 posts)The tweets came after Morning Joe crew was going after his stupid tweets in London and his calling it a travel ban. They were mocking him live for the first tweet hurting their case and then he lost it double downed in true live temper tantrum throwing justice department under the bus on the second ban (that he signed).

(12,412 posts)Anything close to being called a terrorist attack will be blamed on Obama of course and the slow moving political court system.
God help us is an actual attack occurs that pushes him over the edge.
BumRushDaShow
(129,228 posts)most if not all of these "terrorist attacks" were done by *citizens of the countries where the attack happened*. Banning people from certain countries is even more idiotic as an excuse since Saudi or Egypt, for example, where non-U.S. citizens from those countries flew planes into buildings on U.S. soil killing almost 3,000 people, were not included on his " Muslim) Travel Ban".

(4,558 posts)Once again, signs of a fascist
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
Travel ban based on religious belief. Yep.. check mark.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.[/blockquote]
It's the courts fault we're not safe...7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
The travel ban itself, which is a COMPLETE and obvious red herring to anyone who is willing to apply just a miniscule amount of critical thinking.
Donald Trump regularly displays all 14 of the 14 characteristics long attributed to a fascist leader. This is not hyperbole. This is not even listening to what's reported, or opined about him.. taking HIS OWN WORDS.. either spoken in speeches, or written out in tweets he openly and unabashedly displays all 14 of the 14 characteristics.
Be ready for the Reichstag fire of 2017. I don't have any doubt at all that it IS coming.

(5,810 posts)But before that day gets here, how much damage will he do? I weep at the thought of how much he has already done. It sickens me every time he tries to undo the accomplishments of President Obama. He is such a vindictive turd. I cannot think of anything he could do that would surprise me any more.
Let us not forget or be side tracked by our rage at tRump. All of this could be over and behind us. However, the people who could do something to make it all stop are doing nothing. They know the damage he is doing and are gambling with our future for their own selfish reasons. We should save some of our ire and rage for THEM. They could remedy this but are choosing not to lift a finger.
I want answers why this is going on. I have plenty of ideas but I think there is much we don't know. Maybe Comey's testimony will help clarify why tRump is being allowed to continue his rampage of recklessness. How many people are caught up in this mess? I can think of no other reason that so many who COULD help are not doing a thing. I am not a CT nut, but damn...how much more of this shit show must we endure???
BumRushDaShow
(129,228 posts)that he doesn't try to halt Comey's testimony purposely at the last minute, meaning a probable delay in the hearing while it gets hashed out in the courts. That is my fear.

(28,808 posts)know they will not have both houses of congress and the presidency for long. they have to tear down the government, put as much hurt as they can get away with on poor, black, muslim, and female people, siphon off as much of the common wealth and resources of the country as possible, give their donors their quid pro quo, outlaw abortion, make it as close to impossible for democrats to win future elections as they can, on and on.
trump is not doing all this damage by himself. Mitch McConnell is such a craven FUCK that he thinks getting Gorsuch onto the SC is the greatest accomplishment of his life even though it stinks to high heaven.
they thought (as Putin did as well) that trump would be their useful idiot. i do believe that many republicans probably were in denial about the amount of damage he would inflict and are possibly having second thoughts now, but many if not most of them, i think it's "let's make hay while the sun shines."
