Which means that come Oct 16th his returns WON'T be under audit. What can happen between now and then? Will Mueller get access to his past returns? An independent investigation could get them quickly but the house won't ask for a commission to do it despite a dem bill already introduced as well as the March For Truth protests last weekend.

That is a different point. Also, I am not sure how unlikely it is. Trump is a loose canon

What about last year's tax returns, for 2015, are they still under audit too?

It's unlikely but don't forget he's not the brightest bulb in the box and did fire Comey then requested a one on one interview bragging that it was all his idea.
