it can settle into your lungs for a long haul. My friend had undiagnosed bacterial pneumonia for about 5 months until the doctor finally told him even if he *can* drag himself into work, he *shouldn't* for a while.

She may have bronchitis or worse, a fungal infection in her lungs. Those are incredibly difficult to shake.

Some people can power through a normal illness, but she's been working *extremely* hard.

and that team is still busily at work while she recuperates from whatever bug brought her down.

The conspiracy stuff is silly. Fact is, Rachel only occasionally breaks new information, which would be channeled to someone else if she weren't around. Also, no journalists can report sensitive information that has been classified by our government for their own handling, as anything that would alarm the Kremlin almost certainly would be.

Rachel built her viewership by presenting information on TV in a depth that other programs don't, and by often reporting on a topic before most screen media get interested in covering it -- not in knowing about it before them or connecting dots that, amazingly, no one else sees. That's because she draws an evening audience of people who want to know and understand, as opposed to daytime audiences who enjoy more shallow, gossipy, post-fact-world talk and to evening news audiences who are satisfied with the planet as explained between commercials in 1-2 brisk sentences with video clips.

So we care about her, but no big threat to the Kremlin.

She suffers from "cyclical depression". If she's ill and exhausted from it, she might be needing some major downtime. Imagine how depressed we get sometimes over politics and she probably just got hit with a perfect storm.

"Maddow suffers, she says, from "cyclical" depression. "One of the manifestations of depression for me is that I lose my will. And I thereby lose my ability to focus. I don't think I'll ever have the day-to-day consistency in my performance that something like This American Life has. If I'm not depressed and I'm on and I can focus and I can think through something hard and without interruption and without existential emptiness that comes from depression, that gives me – not mania. But I exalt. I exalt in not being depressed."

Over dinner, Maddow keeps talking about her career as if its end might be imminent. She says she sometimes thinks, "This show could be the last one I ever do." I ask her why that anxiety seems so present for her. What would she be losing if she lost her show? Her response is immediate. "My freedom," she says."

About six years ago I had bronchitis for 5 weeks. I tried to work through it for two weeks which only made it worse. I completely lost my voice. I was out of work for 2 weeks on heavy duty antibiotics and prescription cough medicine. I had started to panic that I might never feel better because it just went on and on. I went back to work after 2 weeks of treatment but was only allowed to work half days for the first week. It felt like I was working 22 hours a day during that week because I was so weak.

These things happen to even the healthiest people. She needs to take all the time necessary to get back to tip top shape. My dr had told me that ifI hadn't gone in I would've wound up in the hospital.

She has been gone a long time. Something is very wrong. I sent a letter to MSNBC saying that we are her loyal fans and it would be nice to know what is wrong with her. No one really says anything. It is too weird. If she had a cold or flu someone would say something about it. I said that the silence was unfair. IF it is depression she has talked about it before. Why not now? And MSNBC made it to No. 1 because of her. Makes you wonder if she had death threats and is being protected. I mean, the more they don't let us know what is going on, the more we start thinking all these strange things.

It's just awkward for everyone to pretend she's not what she says she is currently.

I'm just now recovering from a mean ass virus that went bacterial on me and tore me down for almost 3-weeks so far. I'm in her age group, so I'm more than willing to say it happens.

Don't be odd, and listen to the person your making stuff up about. That's a really good rule of thumb!

Had the flu over Easter, got better for a week and then got slammed with one of the worst flus I've had in years for the past two weeks. I missed about four days of work because I couldn't get out of bed, lost my voice, was too nauseous to eat anything, couldn't hear anything and couldn't think straight.

She said she was sick the last episode before she went on leave and you could hear it in her voice so I don't think it's depression.

The fact that she was sick enough to see a doctor, who told her to go home and rest, suggests something like pneumonia or severe bronchitis.
