John McEnroe's response to Margaret Court "Who gives a F***?"

Court claimed that Tennis is "full of lesbians" and that transgender children were the work of the devil.

“Margaret Court is telling us, ‘Tennis is full of lesbians,’” McEnroe said in his response. “The way I see it, there are three options regarding this statement. Number one―this is true, and who gives a fuck? Number two―this is not true, and who should give a fuck? And number three―this is half-true, and should we really give a fuck?”

“When same-sex marriage becomes legal in Australia, I will personally call my good friend Elton John to host the biggest same-sex mass wedding ceremony ever seen—in Margaret Court Arena. Margaret, that’s just the kind of guy I am.”

His behavior was childish, but I remember some TV ads in the 1980's where he parodied himself. He may have been a douche, but he was at least somewhat aware of the fact.

that SHE had to make an issue of this. I think tennis was willing to do a "live and let live" with her, given her talent and how dominant she was back in the day. Instead, she pushed it.

I'm not personally a huge fan of un-naming things, but if they take her name off the court, I think she's brought this on herself. Lord knows how hard it was to be gay in sports 50 years or so ago - if some of her fellow competitors were dealing with that and she knew it, I think she could be more gracious now.

Yvonne Goolagong court, anyone?

I rooted for Borg in the epic matches but by the mid '80s I had come around on McEnroe and realized how terrific he was, on and off the court.

Bonehead decision to skip the Olympics in 1988. He had plenty of company. Virtually all the top tennis males were paralyzed with fear and drenched with excuses. The women were more astute. Steffi Graf embraced the Games from the outset, in fact the trial run in Los Angeles in 1984 as demonstration sport.

McEnroe and Johnny Miller are two of the greatest players-turned-commentator ever.
