Source: Mashable
Dust off your knitting needles it's time for the latest craftivism project of the resistance.
A new initiative called Welcome Blanket takes the length of President Donald Trump's proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall and reimagines it as thousands of "welcome" blankets for refugees. The goal is to knit blankets from 2,000 miles of yarn the projected length of the border wall over the next three months.
With each blanket made, the knitter is encouraged to include a note sharing their family's immigration story and words of welcome for refugee families.
The initiative was started by Jayna Zweiman, cofounder of Pussyhat Project an effort to craft simple pink "pussyhats" that was a viral success in the lead-up to the Women's March on Washington earlier this year. The hats quickly became a symbol of the resistance for women.
...
Starting in July, completed blankets and accompanying notes will be displayed on a rolling basis in the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago. Participants need to send their blankets to the museum by August 20, and Zweiman says the completed 2,000 miles of blankets will go on display by September 2017.
Once the show closes at the end of that month, the individual blankets will be distributed to refugee resettlement organizations to be used by refugee families in the U.S.

What kinds of blankets do you need?
We are asking for blankets that of 40"X40". As we connect with more organizations, we may learn that additional sizes are requested. We will update our website accordingly.
We welcome blankets of different colors and patterns. Our one blanket rule is to make something you would like to receive and have it be new, clean and fresh. If you want to recycle yarn or other knitting materials, please make sure they have all been washed to ensure hygiene. Think about the blanket as a gift to a neighbor.
Extra points if your blanket is washable! We want our blankets to be easy to use.

Absolutely!!! You want to create a handmade gift to welcome someone to the United States? Yes! Please participate! Welcome Blankets focuses on blankets using lines of yarn, but that doesnt mean that kindness always has to fall within the lines. We love that quilters are joining. Instead of thinking of the quilt as a line of yarn, we will add up the square yards of quilted blankets, too. Lets see how much we can build!
I was wondering if we could sew a small quilt. It's easy to just use two pieces of cloth and sandwich in some batting and sew a grid to hold it together. I make them for donations for babies. Thanks for letting me know. So much other news today that I didn't read the whole article about the blankets.

(9,808 posts)None of them produce a 40" wide fabric, so I'll have to make squares or stripes and link them, but that's easy enough.
And heck yeah, a gift blanket should be either acrylic or cotton. Wool is amazing, I love working with it, but when the cat or the kid barfs on it at two in the morning, you want the person who received it to be able to shove it in the washing machine and not worry about getting a pot-holder instead of the warm cozy.
