VR Systems, company hacked by Russian, posted election results before polls closed..

The company at the center of the report is VR Systems, a Tallahassee firm that provides elections technology in eight states and to 58 of Florida's 67 counties. Miami-Dade has contracted with VR Systems since 2007, according to county records, and had a $600,000 deal with the firm to provide a Voter Registration System through November, with a $3.9 million option to continue the deal through 2020.

The company had some notable wobbles last year, most visibly during the August primaries in Broward. Vote totals in that county were posted online a half-hour before polls closed, which is illegal under state law. Other errors led to late and sporadic reporting in several other counties.

A probe into the early posting was launched in Broward, but investigators decided the error was simply an accident. "A staff member of ours inadvertently created a link that was a preview of the election results that were not intended to be public," VR's CEO Mindy Perkins told the Sun Sentinel.

But that same month, the newly leaked NSA report shows, Russian military intelligence broke into VR Systems.

Silence reigns on this issue now.

Democracy is either democracy, or it's not.

Right now, not so much in the KGOP-controlled states.

There is nothing. It is an exceptional claim and this doesn't even begin to prove anything. Itales the people leaping on it look they don't care about the evidence.

I gave up at 9:15 Eastern and started packing for a trip beginning the next morning. The outcome was already certain. I was stunned but at least I had prepared myself for the possibility, since I know plenty of simplistic angry males who vote Republican.

Steve Schale started tweeting ominous news from Florida at about 7:30, specifically that Trump was pulling unprecedented numbers for a Republican in more than 40 counties, and especially the exurban ones. That type of thing is not going to be isolated. It attaches everywhere.

There were several sophisticated sites that forecast state results based on models and turnout and outstanding vote. I took one quick look at Michigan and gave up. The numbers were devastating. This site was down so I was able to wobble around the house instead of watching people here slowly grasp the inevitable.

This Russian hacking is far more troublesome than anything we obsessed about here regarding 2004. I'll continue to insist that suppression is our main opponent. In 2016 everyone wants to spotlight the critical states Hillary lost. However, she underperformed all over the place, including wins in Virginia and New Hampshire, etc. that were much tighter than her polling numbers. I think it was fake news and Comey and reluctant Trump supporters who didn't tell the pollsters how they truly planned to vote, more than fraud. Hillary simply had low upside and couldn't afford a small leak in one area after another.

They went so far as to bring the margins down in VA just to give the overall result more credibility. Brilliant! Not only that, they turned purple counties a wee bit more red so where Obama may have won by 8 or 10 points, HRC only won by 2 or 3.

The whole thing was a work of art.

The system in question here took the raw data from the various boards of elections and then made it into graphics and displays for reports and websites.

They had access to raw data and screeed up and made it public early.

They don't have any access to the tabulation or counting.

A whole lot of people need to take a deep breath and read/research what is and is not there before formulating conspiracy theories that are not viable given the facts, such as the idea that this is indicative of them tampering with totals. They didn't have access to totals to manipulate.

As I've described before it would require breaking into offices at boards of elections in hundreds of counties and doing firmware updates on thousands of machines, updates that require 15-30 minutes per machine, and putting all those machines back and never getting detected at all in any of those cases.

You can't hack any of the machines without have hands on physical access to every one and either booking it to a computer to update or taking it apart and swapping the chips with the firmware.

The real world isn't a James Bond movie. The logistics of doing this on the scale required to actually sway and election and not being detected at all while doing it, before the election when machines are tested or after when things are audited and reviewed make it a pretty well impossible task to pull off.

That's just how it is

If you can explain how it would be possible to pull it off, I'm all ears. So far nobody can.

but why can't we go back to ballots and hand counts? Look at the time and money we waste with the way our elections are since the damned machines came on the scene. I'm sick of it. The Republicans will continue to perfect their method of vote-suppression while working the machines in their favor. No one will convince me they didn't do so in Ohio...either the machines or the tallies. Now, they think Russia may have changed the numbers. Someone sure did, as I remember gasping at the numbers flipping before my eyes.

It has come to the point in my life where I don't think I can ever believe any election in the future that involves machines and I'm pushing toward 80. I've seen my share of elections but haven't felt good about them for years.
