Don’t be distracted by the right-wing media's focus on the person who the Justice Department is charging with leaking classified material (they're calling her an environmentalist who wanted to resist Trump). If she did leak this, she deserves our thanks: The leaked material reveals that in the 2016 presidential election, Vladimir Putin directly attacked our voting system – the core of our democracy.

According to the leaked National Security Agency report, hackers working for Russian military intelligence attacked at least one U.S. voting software supplier days before the election and sent spear-phishing emails to more than 100 local election officials at the end of October or beginning of November.

They then used data from that operation to create a new email account to launch a spear-phishing campaign targeting state and local election boards. They send test emails to two non-existent accounts ostensibly associated with absentee balloting, presumably with the purpose of creating those accounts to mimic legitimate services. And they obtained and maintained access to elements of multiple state or local electoral boards, the assessment said.

We need to know how many votes the Russians may have affected. And, of course, we need to know whether Trump or anyone around him knew or collaborated in this.
