Trump will tweet, "be the messenger, his own warrior, his own lawyer" during Comey testimony

The White House had initially said that it would be setting up a “war room” to deal with Comey’s testimony, but sources this week revealed that officials had failed to follow through with the plan.

Washington Post reporter Robert Costa told MSNBC on Tuesday that the president would directly respond to Comey on Twitter as the testimony is underway.

“I was just talking to some White House officials this morning and their view is that the president himself wants to be the messenger, his own warrior, his own lawyer, his own spokesman,” Costa explained. “Some outside people, some surrogates will be available.”

“But the president is expected to be tweeting on Thursday in response to Comey, not to stay quiet during the testimony,” he added. “Because he himself wants to be the one driving the process.”

Any lawyer can see that Trump is the worst kind of client: Needy, unpredictable, won't listen, and will ultimately refuse to pay for all the services he will demand. In addition, what will this do to your firm's reputation in the legal community, and how will this affect your ability to recruit new lawyers? Years down the road, your firm might win some grudging respect for its unpaid yeoman's work on behalf of Trump, but in the meantime, you'll be driving your firm toward bankruptcy and yourself to the booby hatch trying to represent this client.

Also, you'll get in to a certain point, the retainer will have been used up, Trump won't pay anymore, and you can't withdraw without prejudicing your client, so you're stuck working for nothing for a client who won't follow your advice, and is hurting your firm's reputation. Where do I sign up???

...would be to shut up, and speak only when they advise you to, and then say only what they advise you to say.

“Some outside people, some surrogates will be available.”

Meaning Kushner, Bannon, Conway, and his legal team, having a series of heart attacks while it all unfolds.

The standard advice is, don't talk about your case or anything related to it with anybody but me. What you say to me is privileged. What you say to the rest of the world can bite you on the butt. Sometimes especially stupid clients will say things in public, or to people with whom they have no privilege of confidentiality, that directly contradict the position taken in the case, or that the client has said in a deposition or intends to say in court. This might induce or even obligate the lawyer to withdraw from representation.

Trump would be the ultimate Client From Hell.

Trump's inappropriately inflated sense of himself is the gift that keeps on giving. He cannot stop himself from stepping on the rake. His tweets will likely do his case more harm than I dare say, Comey's testimony. Bring it on.

I'm not sure where the line is, but as soon as President Trump tweets out something so bone stupid that you wonder about whether he has all his marbles, I think Conway would say that that's too far, and it's your fault for noticing Trump's stupidity.

it does seem the stupidity is never ending, doesn't it? If he thinks any of the networks - cable or otherwise - will pull away from comey to cover his pathetic ass, he's dreaming. I know people who are literally taking off work to watch on Thursday - they think history will be made in the unraveling of a presidency. I hope they're right.

Trump is on the defensive and most likely wants to do something aggressive to disrupt the hearing. If everyone's talking about Trump's tweets, and if the media "helpfully" streams them at the bottom of the TV screen, Trump will get what he craves, the chance to control the narrative, even though his tweets likely will be 90% bullshit and/or lies.

We should be able to predict most of what he'll say, though. I'm interested in whether Republicans will enable a hijacking of the hearing by Trump.

Before Comey testifies. They'd like us to believe their message is honest and unrehearsed, but of course it's deeply strategic. They are upset Americans might know they're in full tilt damage control mode. I don't buy a word of this one- no one knows if he will Tweet till it happens, they can't predict a thing.
