Vietnam War, being drafted, living under Nixon, & Watergate just a bump in the road compared to this

shit we've been put through starting with George W. Bush and peaking with the biggest moron to occupy the White House in US history. The Reagan years were mild compared to this. Hell, Reagan and Nixon couldn't even survive a repuke primary in today's republican party. That's how screwed up that party has become. I really believe they recruit the lowest form of scum they can find to run for office.

What do you think fellow old fart DUers? Did you ever imagine, in your wildest dreams, we would actually experience in our lifetime something far worse than the dark days of Vietnam through Nixon?

2. with today's eyes, it's hard to fathom how watergate actually brought nixon down.

looking around at how republicans handle scandal today, it seems amazing that republicans around nixon didn't just shrug and say hey, that's politics, get over it, fake news, etc.

i know, some of them actually did say some of that, but they were regarded as the absolute kooks, the incorrigible die-hards.

big difference when the institutions (media in particular) weren't in the grips of amoral-at-best right-wing-partisan-at-worst bastards.

3. Nope. I thought Dubya could not be topped for stupidity and duplicity.

I still think that Dick Cheney was worse than Steve Bannon because he had a strong following. But this is bad, and we don't even know some of the details of this treasonous regime as yet.

5. During Vietnam and Nixon we had an opposition party.

I'm not sure now, even if we had enough opposition to remove Trump and his cohorts, that the removal process could move forward. Mitch and Paul wouldn't allow it.

8. Why do you think we don't have an opposition party

During Watergate, we had the majority in Congress. Now we don't. And up until the very end, the republican party was prepared to stand by Nixon.

11. It's not the opposition I'm worried about.

It's those in power that I'm worried about. I'm worried how many in the GOP would stand by Trump vs those that don't, and I am worried what Trump would do in the event that even the slightest move was being made toward his removal. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Trump tried to declare martial law to prevent his removal.

As an "old fart" who had to deal with draft and who had close friends and relatives whose lives were turned upside down and in some cases lost during the "dark days" of Vietnam, I'm not prepared to say that what we're experiencing now is "something far worse" than that.

at 71, having lived through 3 assinations, Nixon, Vietnam and a few economic crashes, I am stunned at what this great counrty has inflicted on itself. I had hoped that I would leave this world with my country in better shape than I found it but I fear that is not to be. But, when you really look at this mess of a president, you have to face the fact that my fellow citizens voted for him. We are not going to fix the problem until we face that fact.

For me, it was worse than this. He wasn't infantry. He was a pilot with low risk of getting killed. Yet, I cried every night for 9 months. I was afraid I would never see him again. He came back a changed person. Part of him died over there.

The rest of the stuff, I agree with your post.
