Jake Trapper of "The Lead" was interviewing Congressman Adam Shiff about the NSA Leaker
Reality Winner. Jake referenced two messages that Winner posted on Twitter under the name of Sara Winners.
The first post was: (Nov 8, 2016)
"Well. People suck. #ElectionNight"
The second post was: (Feb 2017)
"the most dangerous entry to this country was the orange fascist we let into the white house"
She also "Liked" a post by the hacking group "Anonymous".
Jake then asked Schiffer, "How does someone like this get a top secret security clearance?"
Schiff gave a long response something to the affect that: "the question is, once people get a TS clearance, how do we go about monitoring them on social media so that we don't make them feel like they are living in a police state and that if they say the wrong thing that they are going to lose their job. But obviously if there are signals being sent out that should sound an alarm, we should be able to hear them."
I just want to know, "Is Jake serious?" While he didn't specifically state what the post was that she "Liked" by Anonymous was, I see nothing wrong with what she said that should be grounds for denying her a TS clearance, prior to her leaking actions. She serve 4 years in the Air Force, and obviously had to forgo an extensive background investigation. My adult kids probably think that I am a prude, (and I'd probably agree with them) but with all the things people with clearances get into trouble about, if the Government started upholding people to Jake Trapper's standards, there would be no one out there with security clearances.
Already the standard is quite high for security clearances with extensive background checks, and periodic rechecks, FBI interviews, polygraphs, and the government perusing one's entire life open to disqualifying factors such as Financial troubles i.e. frequent late payments, bankruptcies, gambling debts, etc., marital infidelities, abusing alcohol or drugs, frequent contacts with foreign nationals, not a person of good character, etc. the bar is already pretty high.
I know one thing for certain and that is, the bar is higher for a person seeking a security clearance than it is for someone seeking the Office of the Presidency like Trump (who btw doesn't even have to have a security clearance, or his background investigated, or be of good moral character, and a solid financial background) and for News Reporters like Jake.
