DeVos: "It is not the education dept's. job to protect LGBTQ students."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/betsy-devos-lgbtq-students_us_5936c878e4b013c4816b4ebc

U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said Tuesday that her agency would not give federal funds to private schools that defy federal antidiscrimination laws. However, she suggested it is not the Department of Education’s job to prevent discrimination against students in cases in which federal antidiscrimination laws are murky, such as with LGBTQ students.

DeVos took part in a contentious hearing before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education on Tuesday morning. There, Democrats and Republicans hammered the secretary on the administration’s proposed budget, which would cut billions of dollars in funding for public education while increasing money to support school choice programs. The budget directs some of this funding toward helping students attend private and religious schools.

While under questioning from Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), DeVos wouldn’t definitively say whether private schools receiving federal funds would be punished for religious discrimination or discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students. She maintained that these schools would be required to follow federal antidiscrimination laws, but said the Department of Education would not be issuing any directives beyond that.

God damn I hate those mother fuckers. It is the job of the schools, the school districts,
and the Dept. of Education to protect ALL students.

BTW we are the United States of America because in no small part because of a
gay man, Barron von Stuben ..... and we won WW II in part because of a gay man,
Alan Turing.

As a dumb ass old white straight guy I just don't get it. Johnny Mac speaks for me.

I have 5 teachers in my family. They are all worried about their jobs, even though they have high seniority. The Repubs now have our public school system "bigly" screwed up and our local union contracts are worthless. Seniority is just a word in the dictionary and teachers are demoralized because they no longer have any protection or say in the performance of their jobs.

Now, DeVos sweeps onto the scene and brings forth her warped ideas of how an educational system should be run. You can tell from her testimony that she doesn't have any idea of the history of public education or the actual progress of present day education. How many private/Christian schools are successful? Profitable? One of our local Christian schools sends their students to the public schools for certain types of classes not available there. Seems they are competent enough to handle that task.

She will be in office just long enough to royally screw everything up and then get bored and move to her next conquest. What a hateful woman.

Thanks for the article.

She's right, we aren't a federally protected class so legally people can and still do discriminate against us. And I think Obama's EO doesn't necessarily work here.

Sorry your private schooling excluded this land mark Supreme Court ruling back in 1954. Sixty three years of history, has passed you by. This and other Supreme Court rulings regarding civil rights that clearly were absent in your private school education, are important for you to read and become familiar with for you to carry out role as Sec. of Education for the federal government. If you find yourself a bit overwhelmed by all of this information that you were shielded from in your private school education - but is binding you in your actions as Sec. of Education - take it as a personal "learnable moment" - as you push a 'school choice' agenda over public school - does it matter if schools that receive public funds, exclude actual history and science facts - that may leave a graduate - unable to perform a future job due to that exclusion of information/knowledge?
