Court asks EPA to justify pausing Obama pollution rule
By Timothy Cama - 06/06/17 05:26 PM EDT

A federal court is asking the Environmental Protection Agency to explain why it has the authority to pause an Obama administration methane pollution rule.

The Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit said Tuesday that it is giving the EPA until June 15 to respond to a lawsuit filed Monday by environmental groups, who say the agency’s action halting the rule was illegal.

At issue is a rule the Obama administration made final last year setting standards that oil and natural gas drillers must follow to monitor and reduce emissions of methane from drilling.

Methane is a greenhouse gas about 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide and is the main component of natural gas.

The lawsuit was the first court challenge of a Trump administration rollback of a climate change regulation.

It's not a win at all if the courts are questioning it. nt babylonsister Jun 2017 #8

They won't respond or they will and the response will be lame. They'll agree to stick to the standards that Obama set, and the case will pass by unnoticed by the trumpanzees. What they will remember is that their orange hero backed out of the Paris accord and saved fifty bazillion 'Murican jobs. Now that is winning!

That's what I'm getting at. I agree that it's wonderful people are paying more attention and not letting them get away with anything. I just think that they won't push too hard because they know there is the potential for this to blow up in their faces.

dt is trying to do so much damage to the environment. They're trying to stop this admin. I'm thrilled.

It had become a rule for a reason. These clowns don't care about the environment.

It could potentially blow up in Pruitt's (EPA's) face. The EPA has no real standing. All science data supports the need to cut methane levels. Therefore, I don't believe Pruitt counts on winning. I think he and the EPA would rather bury cases like this than risk drawing attention to what they really want to accomplish (destroy the environment to make $$$).

of a climate change regulation.

The green groups, including the Environmental Defense Fund and the Sierra Club, say the EPA doesn’t have the authority to halt the regulation, and are asking for an immediate order from the court mandating that the agency not pause it.'

The groups won't let it be a non-event, imo.

That's not what I meant. I'm talking about Pruitt's EPA. Taken as a whole, the deregulation was a "win" for the GOP. The fallout will tell a very different story, and it will come piecemeal like this story.
