You may have noticed recently that a pop-up window suddenly appears from time to time and then fades out before you can see what's in it. After doing some research, I've found out what it is, and learned that there's nothing to worry about.
It is a Command window that opens a background task for Microsoft Office 16. It started showing up after the most recent Windows 10 update. It's not malware or a virus, so you can safely relax and ignore it.
Microsoft is aware of this, and will probably fix it in another weekly update shortly. Someone missed a step in calling that background task and that's why the Command window is appearing briefly.

(146,317 posts)What background tasks it does, I don't know. It's been showing up about once an hour, at a specific time each hour. I'm sure this has been going on all along, but the Command window hasn't started showing up until now.
I know you're joking, but Microsoft has all sorts of crap going on in background tasks. People who are concerned about that probably shouldn't be running Windows or Microsoft Office. Personally, I'm not concerned. Nothing I do is of interest to anyone, really, so I just ignore that nonsense.
As far as tracking keystrokes is concerned, that seems very unlikely. There aren't enough computers on the planet to analyze all of that, so why would Microsoft bother to do it? That's why I pay no attention to that kind of thing.

(28,209 posts)I don't have Word 16, but I do have a couple Win10 machines that have little quirks.
While Cortana is primarily disabled, being one of their chief collectors, they still send directory and files back home for data mining, passage to the NSA and for Amazon marketing. Just as all your emails are scanned by multiple actors, the scanning of a document does not take that much time. The hueristic logic used and the processors thrown at incoming files does this pretty well. They know which stuff on a computer is user created and which is not. They're only harvesting user files.
Some of the researchers and professors, where I take continuing education courses, use laptops with their network cards physically removed in an attempt to protect intellectual property as they are drafting papers.

(146,317 posts)It operates much more frequently and never really shows up on screen. I couldn't find out what background activity this particular thing does, but who knows. Windows is always messing around in the background, doing garbage removal and other things in memory. I stopped being able to follow all of that some time ago.
It's all just a black box these days. I use it to do what I need to do, and just don't worry about any of it any more.

Read through, but the ending seems to be:
Open up Task scheduler, then on your right Task Scheduler Library then Microsoft and then Office. Disable OfficeBackgroundTaskHandlerRegistration and you should be good.

No matter, using OpenOffice now. Works fine for what I need and it's free.
I do remember that insta-window thing a while back. Was mildly worried, but never saw any negative things, so kind of shrugged it off. I guess I do notice that it hasn't been showing up recently.

(32,086 posts)It started after the last hacking event. I figured it was something in the DU software. But, the time on my tablet was also messed up when I opened up DU this morning. I couldn't read DU until I fixed the clock. It was all really weird.
