People In DC Are Watching The Comey Hearing At Bars Like It's The Goddamn Super Bowl
DC is such a weird place to live, you guys.

Former FBI Director James Comey, who accused President Donald Trump of encouraging him to drop at least one aspect of the Russia investigation, is finally testifying in Congress. So obviously, DC residents are hanging out at bars to watch it together.
Hundreds gathered at Shaw's Tavern in Washington to watch the Comey hearing, which opened early to play it aloud and offer "Comey Covfefe specials." The line was down the block before the hearing started at 10am.

(12,448 posts)Great fun! Lots of people there, all anti-Dump. Unlike the usual bar scene, you could hear the TVs clearly. Everyone was riveted.

(5,810 posts)It never hit me until much later that I was watching true American history in the making.
Today, as I watched, I was keenly aware of the historical significance of the Comey testimony. It has a bracing effect to know this and to realize every.word.matters. Also living for nearly 70 years has a way of teaching you what is important while it is happening. I look forward to more pivotal moments in this whole Russiagate affair.

Still remember my reaction when Butterfield casually mentioned that there were recording devices in the President's office.

(81,323 posts)Back then you actually had some moderate Republicans. (NOT republi-CONS, people of the other party who were, oddly enough, reasonable and informed, not many chips on their shoulders, and not viewing "compromise" as a dirty word.) It seemed as though there was growing agreement that we had a President who was terribly compromised and had a serious problem here, rather than a bunch of stubborn ruthless partisans with blinders on, liquid denial gushing through their veins where blood would normally be flowing, and attitudes reeking of bias and already cast in stone.
Both sides, back then, seemed to understand they served THEIR COUNTRY and the Constitution first, and their party second.

(5,810 posts)lead him out to pasture? The only time this morning when I yelled at the TV was when that doddering old fool had his turn at the microphone. What part of she and her campaign were VICTIMS of the Russian hacking did he fail to understand?? Sheesh...no wonder poor Comey was confused by McCain's incoherent ramblings......

(45,462 posts)not sure I trust the top secret sauce of the FBI sandwich. Do we know where it's loyalties lie?
The FBI breakfast and Covfefe coffee sound delightfully DC.
Oh yeah, this is how we roll for political events. The election debates and returns had a lot of bar specials. Some bars cater to liberals and others for conservatives. Halloween had a lot of Trumps and Hillarys, some Anthony Weiners and Russian hookers with yellow stuff on them too.
But I have a feeling it's mostly liberals watching today.

(9,350 posts)It is probably the same way in any non-red state, or non-red city. I do not think Washington, D.C. is such a weird place to live. I could be wrong, but I assume this hearing received high ratings. It probably would have received even higher ratings if it had been held in primetime. Didn't the first Clinton/Trump debate get Super Bowl like ratings?

(15,286 posts)Many Americans outside of political/news junkies have only been paying cursory, at best, attention to this. I'm sure there were those who tuned into a cable channel that was carrying alternate programming, but there were plenty of people tuned it a work or at home what with all the old broadcast networks breaking into daytime shows to air the hearing live.
I myself am hungry for more hearings. Hopefully I have a lot of company now.
