I saw it in Comey's countenance. My dad's had dementia for years, but this isn't about me or my dad. He gave back his answers in a way that was kind. NOBODY knew what the hell McCain was talking about, but Comey, after his own tireless, hours-long testimony, coaxed him. Genuinely seemed to try & understand him. He looked ill, McCain. James Comey looked sharp.

(18,748 posts)Someone who'd been sort of snorting & drooling in his sleep! And very "checked out". McCain seems really sick. He was completely colorless, extra-lily-white pale. I worry about that boy.
I saw something in Comey's posture that announced concern. As if he was poised to help if McCain toppled over. I'm going to re-watch that part on youtube, but I swear Comey sort of braced himself.

(53,410 posts)And I would certainly be kind to someone if I thought they had it.
It's not something people should be laughing at or being nasty about. If this were typical behavior for McCain, yes, but it isn't.

(5,810 posts)But John McCain is a United States Senator. The fact that he was part of this hearing this morning is sad and shameful. Someone should have intervened and stopped this humiliation of him. Something needs to be done to hasten his removal, mainly because he is in a position of power and authority.
He will be the subject of mockery and ridicule as a result of his appearance this morning. I myself commented elsewhere that he needs to be lead out to pasture. Unkind, yes. And after reflection on his time in front of the microphone, I will re-evaluate my quick retort that he needs to go. But my first instinct was that he was just being dense. As some have pointed out, he was definitely not at his best this morning. Someone close to him should take note and get him evaluated ASAP.
And for the record, it took my family a long time to come to the conclusion or suspicion that my mom had dementia. She had always said and done quirky things. It took a while to put all the pieces together to get an appropriate evaluation done and get medications that did help for a while. So I am not blaming McCain's family or colleagues. But today's appearance was a clear signal that something is very wrong with him.

(2,404 posts)McCain has obvious signs and symptoms.
He needs to go. He looks poor physically and is having a lot of trouble finding his words and staying on track.

(18,748 posts)to be bracing himself. I've had to do a lot with my dad, and you have with your mother. We'd need to watch them carefully for signs of trouble.

Maybe Trump isn't the only one who should retire for his health!

(18,748 posts)And I don't think McCain should go straight home and take a nap. He should be taken to a hospital ASAP. "His people" apparently didn't care enough to remove him from the stress.

(9,525 posts)was impressive throughout, especially in contrast to the four yesterday. Comey was nothing but respectful and cooperative, even when asked really stupid questions by those trying to bait him.

(18,748 posts)I wonder if they'd be able to understand each other. Both seem to have every need completely taken care of. Doddering happily along, loaded with health insurance out the wazoo, they couldn't care less: they know their own diapers are going to be changed. The rest of us, not so much.

(478 posts)Throughout his political career, I don't think he's been a very good Senator, but whoever decided to trot him out like that (he's not a member of this committee) and then let him make such a fool of himself, should be ashamed.

He was asked if he thought Hillary would have fired him, and at first he said he didn't know, but after thinking about what the actual outcome was, he changed his mind :0

Very strange...
obviously Comey sensed something was amiss...
and tried to minimize the potential for humiliation/embarrassment of McCain.
Can't say the same for McCain's fellow KGOPhers ... too busy face palming and being pissed that he did not hit a home run to actually throw him a life preserver of any kind...

(16,375 posts)The actor Stacy Keach premiered a one man play of Hemingway towards the end of his life, at the Goodman Theater in Chicago a week ago. He repeatedly said the same lines over and over, seemed lost, wandered about and and behaved very strangely, especially for such for a highly respected actor. It was so bad they finally did stop the show with about 20 minutes to go. Turned out to be a heart attack. It's so fresh in my mind because I saw a preview performance two days earlier when he had very low energy. It all feels like McCain today.

(5,270 posts)My mother had occasional troubling episodes for about 2 years. But she fullly recovered her memory, comprehension and rational speech and behavior after she had a pacemaker installed at age 80. Proper blood flow to her brain restored her mental faculties completely for the rest of her life, until unrelated cancer killed her.

(9,696 posts)He makes decisions that affect all of our lives. So while this episode may be very painful for his family and friends, I view it much more pragmatically. If he were to recognize the issue and step down voluntarily I would appreciate and respect that. If he tries to hold onto power when he is beyond controlling that power, I can not have any sympathy.
