Help me get something straight here....

They have to purchase state mandated STATE IDs --- I thought the GOP disagreed with mandates....and a mandate is a tax according to the Supreme Court...Why should an American be taxed in order to VOTE?

and you don't have to purchase fingerprints, they are passed to you naturally. Fingerprints would be extremely difficult to fake or manufacture.

Why not modernize...could generate some jobs.

12. I think the reverse irony is amusing also, mandates are good except when they're not..

Being able to see both sides does not mean the sides are equal or even imply which one I agree with if any.

6. If they have to purchase the ID in order to vote believe that it would be considered.......

a Poll Tax, and as such it would be illegal as all get out.
How much would 'you' pay for the right to vote?
I think that is why the ID must be state provided.

Ont the other hand,,, I could be wrong you know.

14. Buying the documents necessary to get an ID would constitute a poll tax

Even if the ID is free, the birth certificate, marriage certificate, change of name, passport, etc., needed to secure a voter ID costs money--and it's the government that charges for those documents. There is no hardship waiver to get a birth certificate, etc. AFAIK.

I can't seem to quite remember, but I think there is court precedent that looks down upon such laws no matter how they are dressed.

13. Well at least I may have figured out why the Teapublicans are calling it a mandate........

The Twenty-fourth Amendment (Amendment XXIV) prohibits both Congress and the states from conditioning the right to vote in federal elections on payment of a poll tax or other types of tax. The amendment was proposed by Congress to the states on August 27, 1962, and was ratified by the states on January 23, 1964.

Right back to the "is it a tax" or "is it a mandat" BS

You know, the Teaparty party is really discusting.

requires the state to give the IDs free to low income people. Which is fine by me when I renew I will probably get a free id. I still don't like the law, but if they want to give me an id fine.

you just can't vote. Perhaps there's a work-around. What if I promise to vote for the republicans?

if you have no approved state issued ID already. But then again, if you don't have a copy of your birth certificate available, you will have to get that before you get the ID.....and you will pay for the certified copy. But keeping that financial obligation one step away from the issuing of the ID makes it legal. I guess.

But you already know the answer to what you propose....the GOP has no problem with big government and mandates and spending your money. As long as it is for their own proposals.
