The wife of Democrat Bob Kerrey may be the only political spouse who has ever voiced hope that her husband would become embroiled in a sex scandal.

Seriously? No. It's doubtful that comedy writer Sarah Paley seriously urged friends to have an affair with Kerrey to thwart his political comeback in Nebraska — something she wrote in an essay for this month's Vogue magazine.

But with her piece, “The (Not So) Good Wife,” Paley is generating controversy as well as laughter for her descriptions of herself and the state her husband wants to represent again in the U.S. Senate. Where does the self-effacing humor end and the sophisticated New Yorker put-downs start? Are these the musings of a funny, independent woman or a dig at a spouse's political ambitions?

Who knows? One thing is clear, though: Paley is no typical political wife.
