WASHINGTON Fifty years after Mildred and Richard Loving's landmark legal challenge shattered the laws against interracial marriage in the U.S., some couples of different races still talk of facing discrimination, disapproval and sometimes outright hostility from their fellow Americans.
Although the racist laws against mixed marriages are gone, several interracial couples said in interviews they still get nasty looks, insults and sometimes even violence when people find out about their relationships.
"I have not yet counseled an interracial wedding where someone didn't have a problem on the bride's or the groom's side," said the Rev. Kimberly D. Lucas of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C.
She often counsels engaged interracial couples through the prism of her own 20-year marriage Lucas is black and her husband, Mark Retherford, is white.

I remember this case well, as I was in an interracial relationship at the time. My wife, who is Hawaiian, and I were dating at the time but we lived in Hawaii where interracial relationships and marriages were, and are, commonplace.
This is a reminder that racism in this country has never gone away -- it was not-so-deeply buried in many parts of the USA, and remained out in the open in most of the deep south.
White social misfits are a large segment of the regressive people who elected Trump, and his election has given a new legitimacy to open and rampant racism, bigotry, and misogyny. The "deplorable" segment of our society sees the election of a racist/bigot as carte blanche to come out in the open and proclaim their self-proclaimed superior "whiteness." They are not only blatant racists, they are dangerous, and armed, sociopaths -- especially in states like Florida.
I'm not sure that education alone will cure the plague of racism in this country -- especially in those areas that worship their new KKK master Trump. I fear that we may be headed for another Civil War over the same issue as the first: equality.
