Just wanted to get this in and really didn't want it to get lost in the other Ralph Nader thread....I made my husband in 2000 walk in our huge Oktoberfest parade with a sign that said " * " and gore make me want to ralph. I was so convinced that Ralph would have done things that would have made "Citizens United" never happen that I made my husband walk with students 20 years younger then him in our biggest parade. I'm sick now that ralph is the sticky stuff on the soles of our shoes..........ugh. Sorry just wanted to get that off my chest, and yes....I did vote for ralph in 2000. I'm so ashamed.

(37,161 posts)...He'd have needed a whole slate of Green congressmen to back him up do that.
The thing is, even more than 2000, where is he the rest of the time? What sort of organization has he built?
Does tthe fact that I have to ask that question pretty much answer it?

(108,990 posts)you, in my opinion.
Nader himself is the one who I blame. He knowingly took money from the Rethugs and deliberately campaigned the hardest in the swing states. People like you voted for him in good faith and he let everyone down.

(1 post)Everyone that "blames" Nader always seems to forget that he was not the only "third party" candidate that ran in 2000 (2004 or 2008.... ). Bat Buchanan ran in 2000 as well. Who do his votes "belong" to? Harry Browne ran too. Do his votes "belong" to Bush?
Ross Perot also got a lot of votes in 1992. Close to 20%. Far more than Nader ever has. Most people think that those votes would have gone to Bush I if Perot hadn't been in the race, which means that Clinton would never of been president. Nobody ever whines about that.

(1,374 posts)candidates divide. It is better for the Right to be divided than the Left. Unless you are right wing.

(3,747 posts)you are proud of it.
As you note, 3rd party candidates are spoilers. This is the Democratic Underground. We know what happens when you run a ringer and I'm delighted Perot ran in in 1992, because Clinton would have been defeated and our country would not have had 8 years of peace and prosperity. Nadir is a republican operative and did not even change party affiliation to run as a green.
So, if you're proud of yourself, you need to find another board...this place is not for you.

(1,374 posts)his progressive legacy. What he refused to acknowledge was that all the good he did was because of the Democrats. In 2000 the GOP had majorities in the House, the Senate and the Supreme Court. Nader knew what the GOP wanted to do, but he went ahead and ran a campaign in which he equated the Democrats and Republicans. And the perfect storm happened: Bush carried NH by a narrow margin and the election came down to FL. Nader made it possible for the GOP to get Bush appointed. After all the evil Bush and Co. did, Nader ran again in 2004 and 2008.

(3,747 posts)I'm glad to see that you have spent some time learning about politics and have made changes. We all make mistakes and I hope you will spend some time to work for true progressives from now one. Things are easier to learn because of Google, so we can now really investigate backgrounds.

(811 posts)The difference seems to be that you have learned your lesson.
Ideals are great things to have. Unfortunately, real-life requires compromise if you actually want to see any of your ideals come to fruition. Some of us are unwilling to compromise, and so are always disappointed. In some cases, one has to wonder if they cling to that disappointment.
Some of us understand that real change takes time and a great deal of patience.
I don't care what you did in the past. I only care about what you do in the future.
