Ok I don't know much about this whacko, other than what I have been told and what I have read. I do not listen to his show, but apparently it is quite popular amongst the far, far right in this country. Anyway I read the transcript of his show today, and he was all over the place blaming Sanders for the shooting today and then he says that a civil war is coming. He says that the right wing is getting to their boiling point and they are going to start killing people soon. I am not hyperbolizing here. That is apparently what he said. This man is calling for a civil war because one person, who says he was a Bernie Sanders supporter, went on a shooting spree. Did Rachel Maddow call for a civil war when Gabrielle Giffords was shot in Arizona or did the left go crazy and start calling for blood and right wingers heads when Dylan Roof - a white supremacist, walked in a African American church in South Carolina and executed 9 innocent people in an act of terrorism? Of course not. We reacted rationally and called for gun control, more focus on domestic terrorism groups, and basically reflected on where our country was heading.
But one man from the left, if that is accurate, commits a mass shooting and suddenly battle lines are being drawn and conservatives are calling for the deaths of Liberals all over the country.
I am just telling you guys that you can think I am crazy all you want to. You can say, "ZZ go have a beer and shut up." That is fine. I can have this post removed by the owners of this site, true enough. But are we just going to sit back and wait to be slaughtered? I never thought I would say this but there needs to be some sensible restrictions to the First Amendment. Like other countries when you deliver this kind of hate speech over the radio, you need to be locked the hell up. Canada has limitations, as does England. And you know what, there people are not being denied their liberty or freedom. It's a sensible thing to do.
Maybe we also need to revisit the idea of whether we should allow this kind of crap on the radio at all. This man is inciting violence and as all of us know these people that listen to this show are well armed to the teeth and are not afraid to use their guns to commit violence.
The left acts rationally in the face of white nationalists attacks, like the one that just happened in Oregon. But you guys can expect more of those kinds of attacks in the near future, I am just saying. Some people may want to look into arming themselves. I am not calling for violence, but some people on DU are living in areas of the country where we are not going to be protected, and so it's something that I am going to consider and I have never previously owned a gun or even thought about owning a gun.
Anyway, screw this guy Savage. I hope he gets what's coming to him one day, and he is fired and loses all of his resources and has to be out there begging in the street, since other people have told me that he likes to make fun of the poor. F*ck you you piece of shit.
Everybody on the left, all progressives, just think about arming yourself. I hate to say that and I know it is not popular opinion, but as we know we really have few alternatives as even relying on the police has not worked well for some of us on the left, especially PoC.

(224 posts)Also a deterrent in many European countries. I promise you his call to violence, apparently multiple calls he has made, are not going unheard by these racist, white supremacist. How many people has this man already incited to commit violence? We have the freedom to change the constitution in this country and make it better, lets do it. And yes we also need to go after the guns. It's many different layers of things that need to happen, but we must start somewhere and fast.

(224 posts)He is not interested in equality of your speech as set to his. He is calling for your blood, your death. And apparently this does not alarm you. Perhaps you find it amusing and think he is just hot air, spewing empty threats on the radio. Sadly though, his listeners are willing to act on his calls to violence and have done so already. This isn't even about freedom of speech, it's about stoping people from advocating violence, while they sit behind a microphone free to watch others commit evil acts against innocent people. Then people like Savage, say "hey man I was just excising my right to free speech." That is BS.

(224 posts)Hate speech needs to stop being protected in this country. We need to follow England's lead and other Europeans nations. Other wise we are destined for more of these kinds of shootings and violence we have seen in the past. Make hate speech illegal and let a jury decide the punishment. My opinion no breach on liberty, since hate speech affects other innocent peoples rights to liberty.

(11,949 posts)Think you advocating locking up people for what they say is hate speech?
We lock you up?
Because I find people calling for limiting the 1st amendment more frightening than those calling for a civil war.
zz-la
(224 posts)then yes I should be held accountable. There are in this country already restrictions on your liberties. All I am saying is perhaps we "think" of adding some more. I am harmless I promise. You know I am not capable of taking anything from you. I am just saying hate speech should be more closely monitored. That is all. If the country as a whole disagrees, then no problem. Lets put it to a vote. Maybe. I was only proposing some limitations be added.

So would "I hate Trump" be a crime?
No, we should NOT be as the country from which we gained independence.
Freedom of speech is what makes, pardon the expression, America great.

(58,785 posts)"no yelling fire in a crowded nation" laws as constraints on widespread dissemination of political lies, not simple individual speech.
But we are a nation of laws, and that last is way out of line and inappropriate for Democratic Underground. It also strikes me as the sort of "hysteria" pubs love to pretend women are guilty of. In any case, there are other forums where anarchy is expected and preparing for murder of neighbors is discussed.

(224 posts)But I believe that we are on a course that is going to lead to more innocent people, especially people on the left, being targeted by white nationalists and other far right ideologies and they are heavily armed and they will not resists the opportunity to commit violent attacks and murders. These things are not going to just take care of themselves. We must act. I am not saying a revolution nor am I calling for blood shed, but we need think long and heard about how much inciting of violence we are willing to put up with just because we think putting "some sensible" restrictions in place to the 1st Amendment would go against us as you said we are a nation of laws.

(58,785 posts)is a tragedy, but people die in a nation of 330 million people all the time. Just looked it up --
something like 63 out of every 100,000 of us died today. If that jumped to 64? We'd be unhappy at an uptick in this stuff showing up on the news for a while, but that's all. We've been there before, such as the stream of hijacked airliners in the 1970s into the '80s, but actions always beget reactions. Those basically ended.
In any case, there's just a world of difference between some incidents we hear about when we turn on the news and the collapse of society. Your typical conservatives are actually very big on law and order, with even less tolerance for things to fear than typical liberals, and don't forget--societal collapse would be very bad for business.
That said, I actually do agree with you about the need to put a leash on the Alex Joneses, Fox Newses, bot spreaders, etc.

(224 posts)and of course I should say to clarify that I do not call for retaliation, just sensible protection. I feel that many vulnerable people are getting very scared and are at a point where they feel they are helpless. Nobody seems to have the answers. Of course as you say violence is always around and we cannot stop crime. But what I see is a serious uptick in not crime, but acts of terrorism. People being targeted for their skin color, beliefs, or simple political beliefs. This president couldn't care any less about the slaughter of innocent people who may be Muslin, LGBT, PoC, tc. It was different to some degree in the past, because we had a president who would condemn these attacks, but trump does nothing and now right wing radio loons are calling for a civil war. I guess I have just lived long enough to know when things have gone too far, and I fear major upheaval in the near future. I am not glad or running through the corn fields trying to be an alarmist as others have claimed. Anyway I will go away. I don't post much because I cannot always express myself so well as others do. I will just say I hope I am wrong.

Where were you when Greg Gianforte body slammed a reporter? You laughed your ass off and called for more journalists to be assaulted! And we're the violent ones? Go fuck yourselves!

(224 posts)I did not wish to because I feel it would promote a site that the DU admins would not wish to promote. I am not an alarmist and I am not trying to get people to froth at the mouth as you say. I am misunderstood perhaps in what I am trying to say. I am not advocating any violence. I am not calling for people to have their right to say controversial things taken from them. But when a person is calling for a civil war in this country and outright saying that white nationalists should start committing violence I have lived in other countries where this happened. And just before it happened people laughed and said it was not going to happen. Other countries have sensible restrictions to the right to own and carry guns and even the kind speech that can used to incite violence. I am saying, perhaps, that could be looked at here in this country. But if you wish I will stop posting in this thread. I am not a troll, i just do not post much, because I do not always have the chance to.

(1,943 posts)Why not? That's the conspiracist mantra on all those mass shootings, Sandy Hook, San Bernardino, the one in Oregon. I think that as crazy as people seem to be wanting to be, we should be expecting and prepared for a Reichstag fire type event one of these days, sooner rather than later. This was probably not it.

(35,347 posts)And it's one person on the left.
One person on the right calls for civil war, and it's everybody on the left.
We're individuals. They're a dehumanized group.
Of course, they do the same. So it's okay for us to do it ... because we learn our morality and ethics from them. Funny, I always try to learn from those better than me, not from those worse.
