he said they get you busy worrying how you will eat & feed your family, get medicine and health care, and education for your children so you are so exhausted from doing all of that you are too tired to resist.

(89,252 posts)i think it might be different in islamic countries but that might have more to do with the dictatorship/rulers being more about islam than political ideology. so their thing is more about convincing people resistance would mean resistance to god.
the problem in the US has more to do with race and many white conservatives voting republican because they view social programs as giving free stuff to black and brown people and taking from hard working whites like them.
the problem is low voter participation. Why so many people including young people do not vote each and every time? that's the real issue. Peope who do not vote are responsible for a lot of problems in our country, IMO. Equating USA to a dictatorship (even if corporate) is an insult to those who have lived under real dictatorships.
And yes, economic depression is key to dictatorship. Trump would love to induce second great depression onto the US. With only poor and rich, with no middle class.

(5,801 posts)This has been going on in earnest since raygun. It's a form of social control well known to tyrants throughout history.
Of course, dumbing down the American people makes it harder for most to figure out that this is what has been happening to them, and that it's not an act of dog or some inevitability, it's the calculated outcome of deliberate policy choices.
The kochs and their ilk must be laughing at how they are succeeding in turning America into a neofeudal state.
