I need to know that truth and compassion will outlast and outcompete hatred, division, and oppression.

(2,533 posts)and our country & I have come to this conclusion. Nightmares have happened to others before us and there were great costs , but they did again find a way. Such as Germany, Japan, and many others. Some peoples have not been able to pull themselves out from under the foot of oppression and cruelty. I think we are left with going insane with worry , or taking things one day at a time. Every day I get up in the morning and water my tomato plants. I don't know if some bird will swoop down and eat all my tomatoes , or a rabbit or some other critter, but every day I have the hope I will pick my tomatoes & so I water. None of us know what will happen. If there will be a nuclear war or a dictatorship or what. You know even if every single thing in this country was going great we could still find out tomorrow we have pancreatic cancer or something. All I can do is live now and never forget to tell my kids and grandchildren how much they mean in my life and that I love them. People have been worried about plagues, wars, famine, and cruelty since mankind had it's beginnings I'm sure. I'm sorry I'm not helpful, I just wanted to say I feel that way too and I have to try and pull through it as best I can. (((hug)))

(24,736 posts)Just what I needed.
I too am fortunate to live close to nature. It gives me needed balance.
This was actually a hopeful post, in view of current events.

(9,822 posts)The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community https://www.amazon.com/dp/1887208089/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_m82qzb3PP5X24
A couple of premises: 1) It's only in the last 5000 years - out of the hundreds of thousands in human history - that Empire, supported by an angry sky God, has been the dominant cultural model. When God was a woman, the principles of renewal and care were more to the fore.
2) The largest group of people among the lowest- to highest-consciousness are of course in the middle, the "swing voters" who embrace a social structure but who also have some fear of other cultures. Many of these people, if we're to continue human life on this planet, have got to move into a cultural consciousness that supersedes membership in one's own group to understand that all people, even those with a different world view, are deserving of justice. Our media, working for Empire, of course serve to keep the middle "socialized consciousness" group in fear which turns them toward the "imperial consciousness" of consumerism and a strongman leader.

(1,954 posts)Truth and compassion stem from a benevolent and stable (economically and socially stable, both are required) society, while hatred, division and oppression are fundamental human nature part and parcel with tribalism.
So long as humanity is able to divide itself by race, class and/or religion, hate will almost certainly win.

(80,708 posts)Ferencz is legendary in the world of international law, and he's still at it. He never stops pushing his message and he's donating his life savings to a Genocide Prevention Initiative at the Holocaust Museum. He says he's grateful for the life he's lived in this country, and it's his turn to give back.
Lesley Stahl: You are such an idealist.
Benjamin Ferencz: I don't think I'm an idealist. I'm a realist. And I see the progress. The progress has been remarkable. Look at the emancipation of woman in my lifetime. You're sitting here as a female. Look what's happened to the same-sex marriages. To tell somebody a man can become a woman, a woman can become a man, and a man can marry a man, they would have said, "You're crazy." But it's a reality today. So the world is changing. And you shouldn't-- you know-- be despairing because it's never happened before. Nothing new ever happened before.
