Republicans are wary of Sen. Chuck Grassley's (R-Iowa) decision to launch a Judiciary Committee investigation into the firing of former FBI director James Comey.
Grassley, the panels chairman, took the step this week partly at the urging of Democrats, but said that its his committees job to make sure theres a firewall protecting the FBI from political influence.
There should be no improper interference with FBI investigations to favor any elected official or candidate of either party, Grassley wrote in a Wednesday letter to Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.
Grassleys announcement took his Republican colleagues by surprise, and several said they are uncomfortable with the addition of yet another investigation that could target the Trump White House.
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, said Thursday that he did not think it necessary for the Judiciary Committee to investigate Comeys firing. Still, he said the investigation was Grassleys choice to make as chairman.

You know, the old pissing match....
I say more power to him.
But I will take it as an amusement at this point.

(5,270 posts)She convinced him that they should explore political influence on FBI by Comey coming back to speak more about both Trump and Loretta Lynch.
She is willing to pursue Comey's comments further about Loretta Lynch, knowing there is nothing there as Comey will just say that Lynch did not interfere or influence the FBI investigation, as her request to call it a "matter" instead of "an investigation" was semantic but in no way suggested the investigation itself be curtailed or limited. Comey will again reiterate that the possible appearance of political influence by Lynch (even though she had not influenced the investigation) was his motivation to announce the conclusion of email investigation with no charges.
But, by contrast Comey will once again make it clear that Trump was improperly trying to stop Flynn investigation and then by Trump's own admission, stop the entire Russia investigation to remove the "cloud". So, bad for Trump and no problem for Lynch.
