It's possible he meant 'oh yeah so the fake news says I'm being investigated for firing the FBI director, but hey man the guy doing the investigation TOLD me to fire him! Sad!'

...had wanted to fire Comey for a long time, was thinking of the Russian investigation when he decided, thinking Comey was mishandling it.

Trump addressed the issue after a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He didn’t mention Comey’s treatment of Clinton. “[Comey] wasn’t doing a good job,” Trump told reporters. “Very simply. He was not doing a good job.”
