BY JOHN BOWDEN - 06/17/17 10:04 AM EDT
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) told Fox News on Friday that "somebody" will likely go to jail following the FBI's investigation into Russian election meddling, but said it won't be President Trump.
"They're going to get somebody. I don't think they're going to get the president, but they're going to get somebody, and they're going to get him for something. And they're probably going to go to jail," Gingrich told Fox News's Sean Hannity.
The former Republican Speaker likened the mood at the FBI to an old Western film. "This is like watching an old-fashioned Western movie. This is an Indian hunting party," Gingrich said. "They're out looking for a couple scalps, and they're not going to go home until they get some."
On Wednesday, it was reported that special counsel Robert Mueller had expanded his investigation to include whether Trump had obstructed justice by firing former FBI Director James Comey last month. Trump called the investigation a "witch hunt" and his allies attacked Mueller in the media.
Mueller has reportedly hired 13 lawyers for the federal investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, and plans to hire more. Gingrich on Friday said Mueller had hired too many "high-powered" lawyers to go home "without a scalp."

Newt was with Scooter Libby and Dick Cheney when they went to CI headquarters, to pressure analysts. And he played a role in Trump's campaign. He is a repugnant character, who had purposely attempted to destroy the House in the 1990s. Too bad he isn't incarcerated.

(101,316 posts)I think by an "Indian Hunting Party" he means a hunting party consisting of American Indians, not that is hunting them.
He's progressed from calling it a 'witch hunt' to a 'dragnet' and now an 'Indian hunting party' (I predicted 'inquisition' or 'star chamber').

(51,129 posts)There was a bounty on Native scalps, but they didn't pay Indians to scalp other natives, the Anglo invaders scapled the Natives for the money.

(101,316 posts)I believe that in reality it was Europeans who started it, with the bounty you mention, and then some Indians retaliated by taking scalps too. But in simplistic movies, it was just portrayed as something those horrible barbarians did to the pure innocent white people - I can remember finding out about the real situation.
He talked about an "Indian hunting party", and if you google that phrase, apart from getting references to hunting parties in the country of India, it's usually a party of American Indians going hunting - though often just actual hunting, while fighting is called a "war party". But, this being Gingrich, I think he's stuck in the simplistic "the violence came from the Indians" mentality, hence the "Indian hunting party" reference.

While on Fox News on June 16, Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich compared the FBIs investigation into Russias possible interference into the 2016 presidential race to an Indian hunting party.
The Republican and former presidential candidate said its like watching an old-fashioned Western movie. He then likened the ongoing investigation to Natives on the hunt for scalps.
This is an Indian hunting party, Gingrich said, according to The Hill. Theyre out looking for a couple scalps, and theyre not going to go home until they get some.
Twitter soon erupted with criticisms of Gingrich, with users calling his analogy racist.
Naturally, hed use a completely racist comparison, one user tweeted. Our country going WAY backwards! .............
