My church hosts a creative arts program for kids in the community. They just wrapped up their "summer camp," and they had a festive showcase event on Saturday to share their projects. A joyous time, and everyone left in high spirits. That very night, the mother of one of the students (age 10) was murdered in her front yard, shot to death by a man she had reportedly dated for 4 months but had broken up with a week earlier. He then got back in the truck and fatally shot himself. Senseless, shocking, devastating. Can't even imagine what this little girl and her brother are going through.

(14,921 posts)It feels like a plague, and the NRA has successfully lobbied cowardly lawmakers to prevent the CDC and others from studying gun violence as a public health issue. (And yes, if anyone is thinking of schooling me, I am well aware that many domestic violence victims are slain by other means, and it would have been just as horrific if she had been stabbed or strangled). Two kids have lost their mom and our community has lost a dedicated nurse practitioner. I feel sick about this, and about domestic abuse, and killing innocent people.
