First off, we have a real f-ing problem. Georgias special election is not at all secure.
Georgias aging election system has flaws that could be exploited if a malicious hacker ever breached it, experts say. Its a fear that has escalated with regular news reports about alleged attempts by Russian hackers to meddle in the 2016 presidential election, an issue raised again last week by the release of a leaked National Security Agency document.

A cybersecurity researcher named Logan Lamb tried to test the states election security by investigating Georgias Kennesaw State University Center for Elections Systems, which tests and programs the entire states voting machines. Lamb wrote an automated script for their website.
What he got was 15 gigabytes of a Russian hackers wet dream:
Within the mother lode Lamb found on the centers website was a database containing registration records for the states 6.7 million voters; multiple PDFs with instructions and passwords for election workers to sign in to a central server on Election Day; and software files for the states ExpressPoll pollbooks electronic devices used by pollworkers to verify that a voter is registered before allowing them to cast a ballot. There also appeared to be databases for the so-called GEMS servers. These Global Election Management Systems are used to prepare paper and electronic ballots, tabulate votes and produce summaries of vote totals.
The files were supposed to be behind a password-protected firewall, but the center had misconfigured its server so they were accessible to anyone, according to Lamb.
Lamb did this on his freaking lunch break at work, just to see how easy it would be. It was. Now, what the hell do you think hackers paid by the Kremlin have been doing all this time?

(6,974 posts)Yes we most certainly do.
IF the ruskies can do what they did in 39 states to disenfranchise Dem voters, who knows what they'll be able to do in all 50 states--even in Blue states like California--if they can start fooling around within the very vulnerable voting software we know about And who knows if they didn't in 2016, because it seems as if every month, some new credible article comes out stating something like "Russian interference into our 2016 GE was far wider than we thought or imagined."

"In todays 6th, just 5 percent of families live in poverty, compared to a statewide poverty rate of 17 percent. More than 58 percent of its residents are college graduates, more than double the statewide rate of 28 percent. It sprawls across the northern arc of metro Atlanta, encompassing well-heeled bedroom communities, such as Alpharetta (median household income: $92,839) and Roswell (median household income: $102,500) and Enjetis neighborhood of Johns Creek (median household income: $106,950)."
It's conservative and well-heeled.
Even with unprecedented voter turn-out in 2008, it went for Romney and Mccain in 2012.
In this year's runoff in April there were more Republican votes cast among the 11 Republican candidates than for Ossoff.
Maybe less red than it used to be, but GA as a state will not turn blue for some time. Lived there for 15 years.

(1,107 posts)Newt Gingrich held GA-6 from 1978-1998, Johnny Isakson held it from 1998-2004, Tom Price held it from 2004-2017. And now Handel. A parade of horribles is what this crappy district wants.
In April's primary runoff a total of 192,569 votes were cast. Ossoff got 92,673 votes, independents/others got 1801 votes, the other 11 Republicans candidates combined got 99, 896 votes. Ossoff running against a single Republican candidate was in for a heavy lift.
It's less red than it used to be but, still red.
Regarding your OP, for what it is worth I don't discount for a second the underhanded cheating and general shittiness of Republicans, I just don't think that is the case here. More like rampant incompetence the GA SOS Brian Kemp is a buffoon.

(49,387 posts)IIRC, Georgia aquired something like 23,000 Diebold, paperless voting machines. War vet, incumbent Cleland was the pre- election favorite but lost to Chambliss. That was 2002 or 2004.

(9,199 posts)Cleland went from a 7-point lead to a 6-point loss in two days.
Yeah, that was believable.
