But you can't go nuts every time you see a Moroccan in Brussels. There are hundreds of thousands of them in Belgium.
What the Belgians HAVE been doing is placing (presumably) highly trained armed soldiers at all major train stations, random metro stations and the airport. It's unfortunate, and certainly changes the impression of freedom one used to get there.
But it's not like East Germany, where all the vast patrols of military and paramilitary were there to save the State from its own people. There IS a real threat, and as long as the Belgian government (to the extent that there is one) is either unwilling or remains incapable of rooting the fanatics out, it must be addressed this way. Otherwise, the Belgian Moroccans in general, most of whom want nothing to do with the religious fanatics, will suffer by association.
Corruption and incompetence in Belgian law enforcement is a serious problem (they never talk about this in the tourist literature which will only show you the Grande Place or the canals of Brugge). As long as this remains the case, the soldiers are the last line of defense. I see these guys, often kids barely out of their teens, but if they can handle the job without hurting innocents--and that station is CROWDED--more power to them. I only hope Allah's next martyr is no more efficient at carrying out his self-assigned task. There is always a one in five chance I might be there the day he tries.
