A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official made the disclosure Wednesday during testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee as part of its probe of Russia's interference in the election.
We have evidence of election-related systems in 21 states that were targeted," said Jeanette Manfra, acting deputy under secretary for cybersecurity and communications at DHSs National Protection and Programs Directorate.
Officials would not disclose which states were targeted, emphasizing the need to protect the confidentiality of the states affected. Authorities have previously said that voter databases in Arizona and Illinois were breached by foreign-based hackers. It is also unclear whether any of the remaining state systems were successfully breached.
Manfra would not disclose what states had data "exfiltrated" from their systems when questioned by vice chair Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.)

Officials maintain that the systems targeted were not involved in vote counting.

Unless investigators get into the machines, tabulators, and sealed ballots in each state, they currently just don't know if the vote totals were tampered. Unless they investigate this, there currently would be no evidence. They know it was registration software, because that is where they looked. Places like GA don't have any trail to investigate at all, nada, zilch.

I hope some reforms are put in place for fair election in the future, but the people in power are benefiting from the Russian hacking so I'm doubtful. It's good that this info is being made public.

(825 posts)Why would the Russians want to hack for voter registration information when it is public record? Anyone can get that. Names, addresses, party, whether they voted...
That could not have been the end game. No way.
They are hacking to change the vote totals, looking for holes and vulnerabilities.
Why else would they bother?
