I keep thinking back to the death of Eric Garner...

For those who may have forgotten Eric Garner's situation (after all, it's a long list of names at this point), Garner was the black man in New York who was choked to death by a police officer's chokehold, despite saying he couldn't breathe.

To me, that was the moment it became open season on black men and women. I can see reasonable people disagreeing about Mike Brown and other instances when there hasn't been a recording or when the basic facts are in dispute. But there was no ambiguity about Eric Garner's death, and the cop wasn't even indicted of anything, let alone convicted.

That situation reminds me so much of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. If there was ever going to be a moment we would come to our senses about guns in our country, it seems that would be it. And yet, here we are.

I don't know what it's going to take to have a reformation of our criminal justice system. The Philando Castille decision this week has just left me... depressed... A beloved school custodian going out of his way to be polite to the officer, trying his best to follow vague instructions ("Don't reach for the gun" is NOT the same as "don't move&quot .

I'm not really sure what the point of this post is. I guess there's not really one. Just to say that I feel despondent, that I feel solidarity with my black friends, and we have no choice but to keep working to address the racial biases inherent in our society and legal systems, because this shit can't keep happening.

We could fill multiple threads with names without repeating.

Arthur McDuffie, killed by Miami police in 1979, cops were acquitted of manslaughter and evidence tampering. Verdict triggered the 1980 Miami riots.

How Castile could be gunned down in such a callous way and there be no punishment is just astounding to me...felt the same about Garner and Trayvon Martin, although his death wasn't the result of police brutality. I just feel sick about what our society has become, although I guess it always was. Regardless, I stand with our brothers and sisters of color...I stand ready to listen, to learn, and to fight. I have no concept of the fear of a police officer taking my life during a traffic stop, but I can empathize and I can listen and I can fight side by side...
