The story weve told ourselves that working-class whites flocked to Trump due to job worries or free trade or economic populism is basically wrong, the research papers released this week suggest.
They did flock to Trump. But the reason they did so in enough numbers for Trump to win wasnt anxiety about the economy. It was anxiety about Mexicans, Muslims and blacks.
Heres how they put it in academese: What stands out most, however, is the attitudes that became more strongly related to the vote in 2016: attitudes about immigration, feelings toward black people, and feelings toward Muslims, writes George Washington University professor John Sides. He notes that the media focused on less-educated whites, but negative racial attitudes fueled by Trump were a big motivator for college-educated whites, too.

Ive got three words for you: scared white people, Parker says. Every period of racial progress in this country is followed by a period of retrenchment. Thats what the 2016 election was about, and it was plain as it was happening.

Which means it can happen again with an even more hateful campaign in the future
Look at what is happening at many colleges with racial issues. Not many perpetrators come from impoverished coal county households I bet.

(32,645 posts)Racism is a great word, it says exactly what it means. Everybody understands misogyny, I don' t have to explain it.
The Republican Party - and Trump - played the racism & sexism cards and it worked.
Plus they cheated, lied and stole the election, but that was afterwards.
Professors should keep their language simple and people will understand.
Rush Limbaugh knows how to do that really well.

MSM is who's not considering and looking into it.
Why?
What has MSM been doing in the meantime?
No blame intended here....questions need to be answered. Different policies and practices need be considered.

(19,862 posts)...call it what it is, many white folks fearing the black/brown/Muslims are gonna take over them. And Trump fed it as he mentioned many times in those primary and GE rallies. He'd tell the crows "I'm your last chance...believe me, your last chance"
