people.

Cronkite did not smile about things -- did not joke or downplay the harm being done.

Phil Donahue did not smile. Keith Olberman did not smile. Hillary was very serious and so was Bernie.

Why do the hosts on MSNBC take a more serious stance?

Any reactions to this?

I would be a lot more like Conkrite and Olberman -- these are serious times calling for serious expressions.

And it sure as hell isn't jocular for families and kids involved in these issues.

I like a line from Emily Dickinson -- "I like a look of agony because I know it's true." With these issues, I don't want to see many smiles - I want serious looks.

These aren't trivial aspects -- the effing people on FOX can paint serious and sad expressions on their faces.

It is about ratings and money.

Which doesn't answer your question, because I didn't witness your observation. But in general, that is my view of the teevee

One thing I've come to appreciate about DU is when someone makes a claim most of the posters want specifics. I'd like to know who smiled, what show, and what context?!

Her name was Hillary Rodham Clinton. One time, long long ago, before America became the Republic of Trumpistan (aka ROT), this great lady tried to warn the country about a demagogue named Donald Trump. She warned that he was a con artist, bankruptcy expert, liar, psychopath, fraudster, rapist, serial sexual assaulter, possible pedophile, racist, misogynist, and puppet for Putin, BUT many people did not listen. Instead, they moaned, cried, and made memes because Mrs. Clinton didn't smile enough. Sometimes they even moaned and cried because they thought she smiled too much.

It's been driving me bonkers.

The reporters - Haley Jackson, Kelly O'Donnell (whom I simply can. not. stand.) and even Katy Tur all smile TOOOOOOO much when reporting on things. It's not pleasant, it's disorienting. And worst of all, NORMALIZING.

Some of the daytime hosts are pretty much okay in terms of inappropriate smiling, and I think Lawrence too is mostly okay, but the worse (or maybe crazier) things get, the more Rachel smiles like a damned idiot. I think she just appreciates the political science vantage point too much. Steve Kornaki, too, seems to care more about the wonder of his numbers than their brutal impact. His antics have nearly turned me against him.

I could never be a politician. The things they deal with aren't mere opinions to me, about which reasonable people can disagree, but come out of my most deeply held core values. People who oppose my core values -- especially in ways that actively, directly harm people (and even indirectly harm people as with some environmental issues) -- are more than mere opponents to me. I could never be collegial with them.

And I deeply resent that some newspeople and journalists are so forgiving too

When I see people smile while they were talking about the harm being done by Republican psychopaths, it makes me really angry.

I would not share a joke or a laugh with these psychopaths.

And I sure agree with your view that this normalizes the distructive lying that Republicans engaging. When TV hosts can laugh at what McConnell and Ryan are bringing about for the country, then viewers may think that these evil people are maybe not so evil after all.
