The crisis created by the ultimatum delivered to Qatar by the Saudi-led Gulf coalition has been deepened by mixed messages from Washington.
While Donald Trump has declared himself wholeheartedly behind the blockade on Qatar, the state and defense departments have been sharply critical of the move, in private and in public.
The defence secretary, James Mattis, rushed to assure Doha of continuing support, mindful that US air operations in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Afghanistan fly out of the al-Udeid base, just outside the Qatari capital. Six days after Trump joined Riyadh in denouncing Qatar as a funder of terrorism at a very high level, Mattis signed a $12bn arms deal with the Qataris.
The state department issued a stinging rebuke of the behaviour of the Saudis and their Egyptian, Emirati and Bahraini allies, with the secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, warning them to make their demands on Qatar reasonable and actionable.

(16,863 posts)When you have a "chief executive" asleep at the wheel that has an opinion that sways with the breeze....the Saudi's are willing to give us money, well Qatar is bad...then the minions actually running the show have to clean up the mess. We're in a constitutional crisis, not even taking the Russia investigation into account, because our "president" is happier being a figurehead and is incapable of actually leading!

(9,986 posts)Where does the al-Thani family play into this? They made a huge splash a few years ago in American drag racing (Al-Anabi Racing, driver Kahlaeed Al-Balooshi, several leading American tuners/drivers, Alan Johnson horsepower), including trying to start a winter series at Qutar Racing Club (dragstrip)
Thing is, they folded their tent and left town fairly quickly, a little ahead of the rise of ISIL, and they weren't necessarily good people. There were mutterings about the old Shiek bringing the boys home to tend to business. Given the rumors, and ease of ISIL going into the oil business, I've always wondered. The playboy who made all the celebrity news shows for racing Lambos and Ferarris around suburbia is family, claiming diplomatic immunity. So was the convicted street racer who was PNG over a deadly crash (Michigan?). 2nd generation racer, all around good guy Larry Dixon quit the Al-Anabi deal cold, a few months into a lucrative driving deal with top equipment. Would'nt say why, to anybody!
