Ways to fix our election system

Last edited Mon Jun 26, 2017, 11:15 AM - Edit history (1)

For the sake of our country we need to demand action
Ideas that come to mind would be:
A paper trail
Microfiched
Tallied
Cataloged
Public Record
Randomly verified and cross checked
An official copy of receipt kept on file in a neutral secure location
Remove the electoral college

Take the damn voter rolls servers off the internet. The voting machines don't need any sort of internet connectivity or external i/o ports. All of the machines should be of one make, produced by American companies in American factories with American software. Each machine will be tracked and accounted for at all times and results hashed.

just trying to think of ways for transparency. Lots of things have to change to improve the system.
I must ask though why our votes shouldn't be public verifiable record. We should be confident enough to stand by our votes even in the face of scrutiny.

a job, or a promotion, or a raise, this will become an issue. When employers tell employees what vote is best for the company, they'll know who "listened" and who did not. It really opens up a giant can of worms, possibly including, I think, voter ID issues.

There are certainly some things that can be done here to improve the process, but I think some of those thing might have serious unintended consequences.

I'd be happy with an optical scan ballot (fill in the dot, like those standardized tests we all used to take), filled out manually and fed through a machine. In the end, the voter got exactly what they voted for (no vote flipping) and while the machine may help with the tally, the ballots don't "degrade" (like "hanging chads&quot , so you can recount over and over in the machine, or even by hand if needed.

We're the only country on Earth to use such a stupid system as far as I know. It's ruined TWO major elections now in 2000 and 2016. Two elections in under 20 years where the popular vote winner didn't win the election(With disastrous consequences). Fixing our problems begins with, and ends with repealing this ridiculously undemocratic system. The EC basically exists to rig elections in favor of the rural states, and those typically vote Republican and have ignorant beliefs in a lot of areas. Why is a vote in Wyoming or Oklahoma worth 3-4x the amount of a vote in Cali or NY? And no, the solution is not to attempt "reaching out" to ignorant idiots in the rural states who deny scientific facts like climate change, vote for religious bigotry laws, and have openly racist people running for office.

Every voter gets a receipt with a verification number. That verification number can be used to confirm your vote later online.

Voter registration moved to federal level. No registration in multiple states. Registration cross checked to social security to ensure the deceased are removed from voter rolls.

Federally issued voter registration cards with photo. Must be presented to vote. Replacement IDs can be issued at no cost same day at DMVs.

Voters sign a paper ledger. Total votes recorded must match number of voters signed in or the polling stations results get a full audit.

No equipment that records, counts, or processes votes in any way may ever have an internet connection. Federal election officials pull a small random sampling of voting machines from every state for code review after every election.

Anyone whose eligibility to vote is questioned can vote provisionally. No one is turned away without voting.

Minimum 3 days of voting everywhere.

No results may be released for 1 week after the election. This allows any provisional ballots, counting issues, or other problem to be sorted out without a media circus.

Yes, this institutes voter ID. This shuts up wingers and makes sure IDs are free and easily obtainable. It also prevents them from trying the same tricks they accuse others of performing.

I'm curious if there could be a type of stress test llike they do for banks... Challenge the state or local municipalities in, say a mock attack and see how well it fairs? Problems would show up an hopefully fixed...... or am I just looking too much like a pollyanna. Who ever would profit from a broken system would try to stop it...

What system would need to be in place then to ensure that the paper trail is also verifiable and not just a paper receipt with know way of follow up?

Goodness knows what kind of crimes and atrocities will be committed in the name of the American people before this nightmare is over. A day of reckoning will inevitably follow. Therefore, for the sake of those of us who are standing up for human decency and standing against racism, sexism, homophobia and xenophobia, it should be a matter of public record who voted for and enthusiastically embraced the maelstrom of crimes against humanity that this administration will be and is in fact guilty of when the finally tally is made. I personally don't want my name lumped in with that of the quislings when that day comes.
