Viral video of raccoon on subway causes widespread freak-out

Subway riders are a hardened lot, unfazed by hellacious delays, the transformation of cars into sweatboxes and odors previously unknown to humanity.

But when inhumanity literally boarded the train last week, even the most hardened straphanger choked back panic and vomit. A woman brought a raccoon onto an uptown 6 train.

NYC subway rider Brooke Hogan — who saw something, filmed something, then Instagrammed it — posted video of the animal chilling on a subway seat next to the woman. The two appeared to be acquainted. It snacked from a plastic bowl she was holding, licking vigorously and occasionally gripping it with its paws. Other occupants of the car seemed calm, in that there was no screaming.

But on the @subwaycreatures Instagram account, reactions to the video were mixed to apocalyptic.

You can take any dog on the NYC subway, as long as it fits in a bag:

Either call it a dog, and put it in a bag, or take the raccoon off.

Personally, if I see a raccoon in the daytime, I'm used to assuming it is rabid, since that's about the only time one sees a raccoon in the daytime around my neck of the suburbs. So it would freak me out a little.

Maybe some people who saw the video freaked out but to the usual subway rider, this was entertainment. Sure beats walking into a subway car and finding someone yelling biblical passages.

but its hormones will kick in soon and that woman will find out why raccoons make lousy pets.

I hope she has the brains to turn it in to the appropriate agency or that she lives in an area outside the city where she's been getting it used to the outdoors and finding its natural food.

I do not think that racoon is very old because it did not look very big. I see raccoons here and there where I live. It has been a long time since we have had trouble with rabies where I live so that is not much of a concern. If the raccoon is with a person in a bag then it is most obviously not dangerous and taken care of so being afraid or freaking out is kind of stupid.
